How old is the earth... Does the Bible address this?

We don’t know if God’s “time segments” are the same or different than ours. That specific point is not given in the Bible, so don’t bother looking for it.

The Bible is not meant to give us science. But at the same time, it is not incompatible with science. When we hear people say “Well, God’s six days of creation could be six million years,” well that could be true but the Bible doesn’t say that. However, that theory is indeed plausible and still in harmony with the Bible.

I agree 100%. I know that the last two Popes(Pope John Paul II, and Pope Benedict) do not have a problem with Catholics believing in either version. The Church does not have a problem with any of the empirical sciences. The Church has had an Academy of the Sciences since 1604.

Remember, Pope John Paul II said, " Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to contemplation of truth".

When the Pope steps out of his infallible domain/realm he can be just as foolish or fallible as the rest of us if not even more so if being informed by an academy of science of non Catholics.It seems that our present Pope stated he accepted millions of years because it takes that long for coal and oil to be formed.Like millions of others it seems he was misinformed and had to be corrected that they can in fact be formed very quickly but not as cheaply or in the same quantity.- btw can Catholics accept six seconds,minutes,hours,weeks,months,years,hundreds,thousands,millions,billions or is it just six days that are unacceptable - twinc

Also, you categorically discount anyone who accepts the scientific evidence for the age of the earth, 4.54 billion years, as misinformed. However, you have not presented any scientific evidence, or legitimate argument of any type, that would throw serious doubt on the current scientific view regarding the age of the earth.

One can only wonder why you have adopted a view that contradicts science and also contradicts how the Church says Genesis 1 should be interpreted.

The Pope’s mandate is to lead the faithful to salvation,
They accomplish this very well.
The Scientists have the task of studying the natural world and educating us.
They seem to make a lot of mistakes
How many people still believe in Global warming or the swine-flu Pandemic
How many more m istakes will come to light in the future ?
