How old is the earth?

I have been asked by a nephew to explain the age of the earth in light of Biblical reading (Genesis). He has also asked about dinosaurs and how they fit into the picture. One of his questions concerns Thermonuclear Fusion and how the sun is getting hotter - so, was the sun created only a few thousand years ago or longer.
