How old is too old for bringing babies to confession?

I was recently turned away from confession because my 18-month-old baby was with me. This situation is unavoidable because I have no childcare options (and usually no transportation) at the time confession is offered. I do not challenge the priest’s decision, but for future reference, what is the age limit for young children to be present in the confessional? It is hurting me deeply to remain in sin.

It is up to the priest using his discretion as to what is appropriate. In my own opinion, babies of any age should never be brought into the confessional while a parent confesses. It sets bad precedent and encourages bad habits that are hard to break later (as you are finding out). If you have a problem going to confession because of lack of childcare, talk to your pastor. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are other families in the parish who could be encouraged to come to confession more often if childcare was available during confession times. Perhaps the pastor might encourage parishioners attending confession to volunteer to supervise each others’ children.
