How old was Mary at the Annunciation?

The other day I was listening to Mother Miriam, answering a radio question, and I was STUNNED when she made a passing comment that Mary was 15 when Christ was incarnated.

I never knew that, and wondered why God would have picked a child for the Mother of God.

I realize that it was a different time and culture, but today that would be child abuse.
