My father (who was born in 1943) told me that he took first communion at about age 10, and was confirmed in his teens. Granted this was in a rural parish in the diocese of Lincoln NE, but I thought kids were older when they took first communion before Vatican 2. Anyway it does vary from diocese to diocese. I know in Omaha and Lincoln it usually ocurred between 5th and 8th grade depending on when the Bishop came. However Grand Island’s diocese usually had confirmation for their kids in High school, which I heard was because it was such a small diocese and didn’t have many catholic schools (no elementary schools if I remember)
