Okay…

I got this from a Traditional Catholic/on the verge of becoming a Sedecavantist:
Jews are our oldest enemies…Judas is the epitome of a Jew…the whole “we killed Jesus” thing is such a modernist twist of what the Church has always taught…the blood of Christ is on them and their children…Padre Pio said that Jews are the enemies of God and foes of our Holy Religion…“The Jews…killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us; they do not please God, and are opposed to everyone” 1st Thess. 2:15…‘anti-semitism’ is kind of a bogus term that jews like to throw around…i’m just going off of the writings of the saints/popes/councils…we really shouldn’t call them our elder brethren…O.T. Judaism is not the Judaism of today…we are in no way their descendents. such a statement would imply that Catholicism is not in continuity w/ O.T. Judaism…we might as well call the Eastern Orthodox our elder brethren in the faith since they’ve rejected the past 14 ecumenical councils…jp2 called jews our elder brethren despite the fact that they’ve rejected the Gospel…Christ annuls the first Covenant to establish the Second. ~ Hebrews x.9
He then went onto quote I Kings viii.7-8, I Kings viii.18, Acts vii.51-52, Exodus xxxii.9, Wisdom iii.19, Psalm lxxx.12; lxviii.22-29, Daniel 9: 26.

I then asked a good friend and a priest. He gave me this explanation:
Jews are to be looked upon with respect as our Elder brothers. As Pius XII said, speaking to a Jewish audience, “I am but the Vicar of Christ, you are his kith and kin (friends and family).” This does not change the fact that all who are saved are saved by Christ through His Church, our Jewish brothers and sisters included. How would God accomplish this? That is for God to know. We must pray and preach, frequent the sacraments and love all, and let God do the rest!
Can I have a little help distinguishing between these two different views from these two Catholics?

The second answer – that Jews are our elder brothers in the Faith, maintaining their loyalty to the Covenant of Sinai – is the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, founded in the Decisions of the Fathers of Vatican II, and recorded in the Documents thereof.

The Sedevacantists have separated themselves from Rome – by denying communion – rather than by being pushed out (excommunicated). You can also see the depth of their hate and rage in that screed about Jews – which might have been lifted verbatim from Nazi propaganda (or Luther’s writings).

Beware those who froth at the mouth.

I agree, that’s how I have always considered it. I took my confirmation class to the synagogue a while back. The Rabbi couldn’t get over how much we knew- I tried to explain that it is part of our faith!

Who think that we split Judaism? I mean, are we a breakaway secy of Judaism? Does this apply to Islam??

I agree with my priest. How can I help my friend though who views the Jews in such a horrible light? I try to talk reason to him but he keeps coming back with the same stuff.

Yes, we are a sect of Judaism that became separate, for reasons both good (Jesus Christ) and bad (Roman agression).

No, Mohammdenaism is not s schism from Judaism. It is to the Eastern Orthodox as Protestants are to Rome – a confusion of misinterpretations and deliberate heresies.

And the only thing you can do for/about Sedevacantists who are so angry and vengeful is pray.

The definitive modern document dealing with this is V2’s Nostra Aetate (Dealing with Non-Christian Religions)

A list of resources are here:
bc.edu/research/cjl/meta-elements/texts/cjrelations/topics/NA-40.htm

Recently BXVI reaffirmed the church’s intention to fruitful dialog and brotherly appreciation. The text is here:
bc.edu/research/cjl/meta-elements/texts/cjrelations/resources/documents/catholic/Benedict_XVI/NA40_26Oct05.htm

The church must have a “purification of memory” according to JPII to effectively implement this though. Pray that our Jewish bretheren may see the light of Christ and if God does not give them this grace that they follow their God and our God with the light that they have.

While we would look foolish if we pretended that leaders in the Catholic Church have always spoken favorably about Judaism we must be careful to seperate someone’s opinion from the teachings of the Church.

I would, if I were in your shoes, as your friend to provide the proof for HIS assertions. He has quoted scripture but ask him if he is quoting it in context and if it is in conformity with the teachings of the Holy Mother Church. Ask him to provide YOU with proof of Padre Pio’s statements and then ask him what reaction St. Padre Pio’s received from his superiors…remind him, gently, that the good Saint went to confession himself every day and that while he may have been a good and holy man he was not perfect.

As a young girl I can remember when we, during Mass, would pray for the conversion of both Jew and GENTILE…in other words we were taught that those who were seperated from us and not in full communion with Rome were GENTILES. We still should pray for the conversion of all those who do not accept Jesus Christ as God but remember that praying for their conversion does not mean we do not have respect for them, or treat them with the dignity due the human person.

Could you point out where in Vatican II it says that the Jews maintain their loyalty to the covenant of Sinai?

Also, could someone explain what that means?
