How our spiritual practices literally change our brains

Fantastic post! 🙂 Thank you, I enjoyed that, and I bookmarked it, too. It’ll take me awhile to digest all of it, but one thing that’s interesting is that, if my memory’s correct, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin said almost exactly the same thing in one of his books. I can’t recall which book, essay or letter it was in (although I don’t think it was The Phenomenon of Man), but he maintained that the frontal lobes were the next frontier of human physical evolution, and of course he equated it with spirituality and growth in Christ. I don’t know how he knew this, considering he didn’t have radioactive dyes and 3-D brain imaging machines, but he mentioned it decades ago.

The importance of the frontal lobe – this is the area just behind the distinctively large human forehead – had been known since the Phineas Gage case in 1861. As a result of this man suffering a freak accident to that part of his head, and the catastrophic sequelae to his life (despite an otherwise almost unimpaired mind), the functions of the area in integrating the human personality began to be known decades before modern neuroscience tools were available.

Very interesting, now I must do research on both Phineas Gage and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Thanks for both your comments!

The frontal lobe is also where we filter out information which comes into our consciousness.

Its where we filter right from wrong.

Years ago I took a work shop on brain washing, at a CCD Teachers Conference, given by a woman who was once a member of the cult, The Unification Church, of Sun Myung Moon. She was rescued(long story), but became an expert on brainwashing techniques, which led her into becoming a consultant for the US Government.

Anyway, the main technique is to put the frontal lobe to sleep, so that the person is only functioning or the cerebral cortex. When a person is in this state, they have to be told what to do and think, for they become incapable of thinking for themselves.

Scary, but definitely explains a lot. Do you remember her name?

Wow. I shall have to research that.

Kind of disproves the notion that the cerebral cortex is where our life is lived, then, non?

No I do not remember her name, but she looked like a woman who was probably a Miss America at one time. She was very well educated and from an upper middle class family from Connecticut.

Yea the article actually discusses that as well.
