How Relevant Is Our Lady Of Fatima Today ?

This church has nothing to do with lack of devotion to Our Lady. It has to do with bad ideas of modern architecture that have been plaguing our churches since the 1940’s…this is nothing new.
This has EVERYTHING to do with devotion to Our Lady. This was the chance to build a beautiful “Catholic Church” dedicated to Mary. Instead we got a “banal, on the spot, fabricated” non-denominational “building”.

Churches are not “dedicated to Mary”. They can be dedicated in honor of Mary, but not TO Mary.

Actually, I attend only the so-called Tridentine Mass, and no, they don’t talk about “Fatima”, they talk about the day’s liturgy and the texts thereof.
That’s great that you go to the Traditional Mass but if your sermons are only on the days liturgy then your priest is not giving you all that he should. A sermon should be for instruction on all that the Church believes not just on the gospel of the day.

No, it doesn’t have anything to do with Our Lady. There are thousands of other horrible modern churches that are not dedicated in honor of Our Lady. To say that this one represents a lack of devotion just doesn’t make sense. It would make sense if all the other churches being built were really good and this one was bad, but that’s simply not the case. Bad church architecture is a totally separate issue from lack of respect for Mary.

Your reference to the words of Cardinal Ratzinger are kind of comical…I would certainly hope that any church is fabricated. If it wasn’t it, would probably fall down on us.

Sadly, the church in Fatima is quite in keeping with the vast majority of liturgical architecture of the past 60 years!

Actually, the sermon is not required…or supposed to be…a miniature course on the totality of Catholicism.

One priest I once knew devoted every sermon to an ongoing discussion of the Catechism. Ascension Thursday, we heard about whatever happened to be the chapter he was on in the Catechism. That’s inappropriate.

So why are new Catholic Churches made to look just like Protestant Chruches? Is Traditional architecture to be avoided? Does the sanctuary have to be made so plain. Look at the sanctuary at Fatima, it is plain ugly.

Yes it is sad. But it did not have to be so! This site is visited by non-Catholics as well. Is the Church incapable or unwilling to build something majestic. Can you imagine if St Peters was built today?
Why not build a Church at Fatima like the one at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend Ind. One of the Most beautiful Churches I have been to. Would that have been asking too much?

Quotes allegedly from Christ and the Virgin suddenly receive greater interest and attention than the sacred liturgy. Amazing. And exactly the problem many exhibit with respect to these fear mongering devotions and private revelations.
God hasn’t stopped speaking to the World since the death of St. John the Evangelist. If God is speaking, I want to hear it.

Its insulting for you to grossly characterize all apparitions as “fear mongering devotions”.

I agree, and now that Portugal, the home country of Fatima also allows abortions what are we to make of this? I read somewhere once that 40 million Americans have been aborted since Roe.

That grave sin is a worldwide pandemic not specific to Russia.

True, there are evils the world over. Still, Russia is hostile to the Church, unrepentant and unconverted.

Yes, Fatima is as relevant today as it was nearly 100 years ago, only more so.

You will find that churches built from around 1950 onward are very similar in their modernity whether they are protestant or Catholic does not matter. The same modernism that poisoned catholic sacred architecture poisoned all manner of sacred architecture.

Please don’t misunderstand me. I agree it is horrible architecture and that there is some good sacred architecture being done. But most sacred architecture is still bad just like what was built in Fatima. Fortunately, I think there will be a rebirth of classical sacred architecture - Duncan Stroik and Thomas Gordon Smith of Notre Dame come to mind. My point in all of this is that we should not read into the Fatima church an effort to undermine marian devotion, but rather just more of the same bad architecture that has been going on for some time.

I am glad you are so well informed, Sure. Yes, there was a “coup” by the classicists in the ND School of Architecture back in the early 90’s. ND Architecture is now the epicenter of the global recovery of traditional Catholic liturgical and devotional architecture. God is doing great things at Notre Dame.

Yet, there are gay pride parades down the Via Nazionale but the Homosexual Lobby can’t get a permit in Moscow.

Orthodoxy is a required subject in all Russian schools but don’t mention God in America.

Either the Pope did the Consecration and Sister Lucia said it was done, or we’re all being deceived. And, George Bush ordered the attacks on 911, there are UFOs that are penetrating our atmosphere daily, those really are black helicopters following you, and you should get an aluminum foil hat to protect you from the new machines that can brainwash you.

She said that Russia would be converted. She didn’t say that the country would be converted to Latin Rite Catholicism.

But she did say converted. Right? To what? Mormonism? Protestantism? Converted to what, Volodymyr 988?

I hate to break this to you, but God does not speak to us through Saint Mary, if anything she would be speaking for herself.

No, the conversion of Russia to an Eastern Catholic Church or the reunification of East and West would suffice. Lord knows she worked through JPII, the bishop in white to bring about the fall of Soviet Communism. There is still work to do to bring about about the end of Orthodox collaboration with every Russian ambition to exploit and dominate the Slavic peoples.
