How responsible are we for the salvation of others?

Amongst the various debates going on now as a result of the inauguration of our new president, that of abortion is becoming increasingly heated in my community, church, and home. I know exactly how I feel about abortion, and the feeling is shared by my entire family ( if not everyone I associate with, unfortunately.) I care for every child, and truthfully the baby’s welfare is all I’m interested in. I appose abortion because it will end the life of an innocent baby. I know that it is a sin, wrong at ANY stage of pregnancy, and I will never have one, nor will I permit anyone in my family to have one, and I will go to all lengths possible to prevent a friend or acquaintance of mine from eliminating their child. But how far does my responsibility stretch? At the end of the day, it is THEIR child , THEIR salvation, THEIR future guilt and pain , and THEIR life. I know I have a responsibility to God, the innocent, and to my fellow person, but I don’t think it’s fair that I feel guilty when someone I know has an abortion, because I " couldn’t stop it" These people who abort have, for whatever reason, engaged in sexual activity and not thought about the natural consequences of such an act. Upon being faced with something unpleasant, they take the most selfish route. At the end, these people will have to face God and explain. Not I. They will live forever with the grief and regret, and they will have to endure purgatory or hell because of their sin, not I. I invest so much emotional energy into trying to help people, when I feel maybe that it’s not my business to do so.

And here is where I have a problem. How responsible are we, as Catholics, for the salvation and moral judgment of others ( in particular regard to the issue of abortion.) We can do everything in our power, but are we to be punished by God if we fail to stop an abortion that we may have been able to halt had we done or said just one more thing, or been a little stronger?

I hope I’ve done a good job of explaining my dilemma.

Yes, you have done a good job of explaining your dilemma, Amanda whose name actually means “love”.

To your question…
**We can do everything in our power, but are we to be punished by God if we fail to stop an abortion that we may have been able to halt had we done or said just one more thing, or been a little stronger? **

You have done the best you can manage…you have no power over another’s free choices. You cannot be judged or punished therefore for the choices that someone else makes. You will be blessed by God for your sincere efforts to protect the life of any or all unborn children, even if those efforts fail because others make a free personal choice to ignore you.
God bless you, Trishie 🙂
