If you seek spiritual advice, and your priest gives you direction, are you obligated to do what he has instructed, or is it just a good idea to?

You’re seeking advice, and advice is only as good as the person it comes from. I’ve had a priest (one of the instructors at a seminary here, actually) tell me that in the case of contraception people should follow their conscience…not in line with Church teaching, and it was coming from a priest? I couldn’t believe it.

Yet, most priests I’ve known are good solid ones. As long as they are advising you in line with what the Church teaches, I’d say at least look into their advice. You are not bound to do what he’s instructed, though, since you’re just looking for counsel, but if it comes from a good solid guy then it’s probably worth giving it a shot.
