How should Catholics respond to pagan prophesies?

I’m watching a history channel expose on the Mayan Codicies which predict that the end of the world will occur on December 21, 2012 according to a calendar which is supposedly more accurate that the one in modern use and even more advanced than Egyptian, Celtic/Druid and Alchemical astrology and astronomy. It says on this date “The Supreme Being will Return and begin His Rule”

How do Catholics respond to prophecies like this that sound eerily similar to Revelation?

I am highly skeptical of all of this, but it’s just interesting to hear these and look at them with a Catholic mind.

“For you know not the day nor the hour in which I Will return”

“Beware of men in sheeps clothing who will attempt to lead many astray”

“And Behold: I AM with you until the end of the age”
 
The Mayans believed that certain dates marked the end of an established age. In this case, it is believed that the current age would end and the age of aquarius would be ushered in.

So if you enjoy the music of The 5th Dimension, this date may have meaning.😉
 
If they were very smart, they could have predicted their own demise.

Prophecies of the end have - & will have - a failure-rate of 100 %. (Now that prophecy is one you can trust !) People who prophecy falsely should be severely dealt with, IMHO.
 
My guess is that date will pass without event…

“While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.” (1 Thessalonians 5:3)
 
I forget - didn’t this date have something to do with the Earth’s location in the galaxy? Like on that day it and our solar system would pass through…some axis or something? :confused:
 
Jesus explicitly said, “No man knows the day or hour.”

Presumably “man” would include Mayans.

Don’t lose any sleep over it.

You’re on the right track: on this date our sun takes it’s position at the center of the Milky Way in conjunction with the Earth completing one complete “wobble” on it’s axis. The center of the galaxy according to them was the source of all the netherworld and the sun represented the “Supreme Being” so by the sun entering this region of the galaxy, it causes an astrological manifestation of the Supreme Being conquering evil and returning to the Earth who’s cycle of life is now complete. :rolleyes: 👍

Um, could you possibly cite this please. I’m a little skeptical of it for two reasons:
  1. I’m fairly certain that our solar system is FAR from the center of the galaxy. We’re actually toward the proverbial “outskirts”.
  2. Nobody on earth even knew about galaxies during the era of the Mayans to even postulate such a theory.
 
I would like to cite, but again, I’m just repeating the info i heard from a history channel program last night that got me thinking. I"m not propagating or researching this, and don’t know where to refer you to that’s accurate other than the Drezden Codex which is the Codex that contains their religious calendar that prophesies this whole thing. :confused:

Ah the History Channel!

I stopped watching that channel about two years ago once they decided to scrap historical accuracy for the newest selling conspiracy theory.

I’ll try to do a search myself and if I find any info, I’ll provide a link here.

First on the subject of prophecy, the Mayan Long Count Calendar is not a prophecy but a calendar. It looks like the Mayan understanding of time was cyclical. On 12/20/2012, a cycle comes to an end and another begins 12/21/2012. That’s all the calendar says.

Granted, the Mayans believed that the previous world came to an end on the same “count” as will occur on 12/20/2012, but the Mayans also believed that the previous three worlds were failures. Ours, apparently, was considered a success.

Also, according to many scholars, the Mayans apparently tended to believe that witnessing the end of a cycle was particularly auspicious, not cataclysmic. Add to that that there are inscriptions beyond 2012 (some bearing the year 4772), and one begins to get the feeling that the Mayans thought the world would stick around past Christmas that year.

All of which doesn’t address the fundamental thing to keep in mind which Gottle mentioned in his post: unless you’re thinking of converting to the Mayan religion and subscribing to its particular beliefs, our assurance (such as it is!) from God is that no one knows when the end will be. This should be both comfort and encouragement: Don’t worry about the future, but as Paul says (and I paraphrase) the time for salvation is always now.

And speaking of Paul and time–keep in mind that our notion of time is very literal, linear, and, for the most part, quantitative. Paul and the Greeks referred to this sort of time as Chronos. When we encounter what I’ll call mystical time (which Paul and the Greeks referred to as Kairos), we tend to confuse the two. Kairos is the quality of a time, Chronos is the measurement of time. Kairos refers to eternity, Chronos to the progress of hours. I would argue that the end of the world is a Kairos event–just like salvation–and as such is always available now now and now. And what does the end mean, in the context of Biblical prochecy? The fulfillment of all things by the Father through Christ in the Spirit. That fulfillment is not something we have to wait for, nor is it something to fear!
