How should Catholics respond to pagan prophesies?

I’m watching a history channel expose on the Mayan Codicies which predict that the end of the world will occur on December 21, 2012 according to a calendar which is supposedly more accurate that the one in modern use and even more advanced than Egyptian, Celtic/Druid and Alchemical astrology and astronomy…

Yes, I read that their calendar was so advanced and accurate that all their holidays automatically fell on Monday…

The Mayans believed that certain dates marked the end of an established age. In this case, it is believed that the current age would end and the age of aquarius would be ushered in.

So if you enjoy the music of The 5th Dimension, this date may have meaning.

Indeed. It may not be the end of the “world”, but an “age”…kind of like 22 November '63 being the “end of Camelot”, the Don MacLean’s “day the Music died”, or world history being divided between “before 9/11” and “after 9/11”.

Had the Mayans survived, maybe there would have been friction between “Old” and “New Calendarists”.

The Maya still live. Their civilization and culture have changed, and many are Catholic. But most carry the essence of their culture, especially what is compatible with Catholic tradition.

As for an end to an age, yes, I see that as an important facet.

And, as for non-Christian prophecy, the Book of Mormon contains many prophecies of the end of Mormonism.

Sorry, I didn’t mean the Mayans as a whole, but the disappearance of the southern lowland Mayan civilization that’s always talked about, like on some of those History channel specials, the voiceover at the beginning of the old Battlestar Galactica, or my old Otis G. Firefly’s Phantasmagoric Almanac.

Remember the Magi, who I believe were Zoroastrians. Their prophecies led them to seek the Christ Child.

Pagan prophecies which lead one to Christ might very well have God as their source: Sheep in wolves’ clothing, if you will.

This is also what I was getting at and thinking of as part of this (The Zoroastrian Magi), sorry for not mentioning that earlier . I don’t know why I didn’t write anything even though it was glaring me in the face as part of my thought process in this whole thing.

I read that in 2012, venus will pass across the sun and that nasa
claims that the suns polar shift is due that year…
so i heard that there will be many catastrophic events that yr… does
anyone know more about this?

Even if such event would happen I doubt it’ll have much impact.

If really ‘the sun goes on a fritz’ at worst we’ll feel some effects carried over by the solar winds and some satelites might be damaged in the process.

The Sun’s magnetic poles will remain as they are now, with the north magnetic pole pointing through the Sun’s southern hemisphere, until the year 2012 when they will reverse again. This transition happens, as far as we know, at the peak of every 11-year sunspot cycle – like clockwork.

So it happens every 11 years… are we gonna blame 9/11 (which happened in 2001) on the Sun magnetic field as well?
