Seeing a member of the family converting to another religion is one of the biggest disappointments especially for parents or even relative and friends, even though they may not be so vocal about it. I often come across such cases and have ministered to parents whose children converted to another religion, sometimes because of marriages where the child need to convert to the spouse’s religion. One cannot imagine the pain that such parents feel. One father said, “Son, when you reject my religion you are rejecting me.” Such is the extent of frustration and the pain that they feel.I don’t understand why some people feel such a sense of betrayal when those they know convert.
So it is not surprising that they do not support conversion of family members. In fact we should expect it because it is real. What we can do of course is to be humble, perhaps try to change in our personal life. If we should convert at least it brings changes for the better, and that may lessen the resentment of our critiques.
