How should I deal with this?

This isn’t a religious/ spiritual situation, just a strange familial dynamic one.

My parents seperated/divorced some years ago and now have new significant others.

I live a few states away from my father and so I don’t see him so often but I talk with him on the phone once or twice a month. My father is a socially immature guy- perhaps in the autistic spectrum. He doesn’t exactly socialize in a normal way with others if this makes any sense. My father and I do not have any “heart-to-heart” talks or any such thing. He doesn’t seem cognitively or emotionally capable of this. Still, I love him and accept him for who he is- we all have faults- especially me. 🙂

He also seems to find relationships with women who are very controlling. My mother was this way and now his girlfriend is this way as well. She dosen’t like him to be away from her for any period and so they kind of just stay at home most of the time. They do not go out to eat or any other activity which would take them away from home. Neither of them work. The GF receives disability and money from her parents and my father has money from the estate of his deceased parents They sleep during the day and wake up at night. My dad’s GF also uses pills for anxiety and is likely addicted to them. Her presentation is rather odd and “spastic” in a way, so I suppose these two “odd birds” have found eachother. Who knows- my father may be abusing pills as well. . . hard to say.

The GF is also extremely preoccupied with money is is very very “tight” in that department. I don’t know if she is worried about my dad’s money or if I am trying to do something behind her back or whatever. I believe that my father will likely spend whatever money he has before he dies and if there is any left, then he will leave it to her, so money is not foremost in my mind at least. All of this is simply background and to set the stage, as it were, regarding the central issue I face.

I have noticed when I call my dad that the GF picks up the other line and quietly listens to our conversation. I find this a little. . . awkward. My father and I engage in completely inoccuous conversation, largely because my father isn’t really inclined to talk about anything of real consequence. We usually talk about video games or pets or something entirely surface.

So, needless to say, I don’t like being listened to so what do I do? I wouldn’t say I dislike the GF so much as I really don’t care enough to dislike her. If my father is fine in his limited way, then I’m fine. It’s just a weird situation.

Truthfully, I have to say that there may not be anything you can do about this.
I can understand why you would feel “creepy” about it, but I can’t think if anything you can do that would not cause problems for you dad. You may just need to “offer it up”.

Peace
James

Yes, I have thought this. “the only person you can change is you” sort of thing.

It is really bothersome though, and is quite uncomfortable for me.

What would happen if you cheerfully acknowledged her presence and included her in the conversation? It might not get her off the phone, but at least you’d remove the creepy silent lurker factor.

Agreed. The GF listening on the phone is part of her “controlling” your father, and that is not going to change. If you attempt to do anything about this she will see it immediately as a threat, and react accordingly. Your father will probably be worse off.

Offer it up, and keep on loving your dad! I’m sure your calls are precious to him, even if he doesn’t show it. 🙂

Thanks for your replies,

So I guess I will “offer it up” and just ignore it when I hear the other line being picked up. This is the life my father has chosen and, barring any significant indications; I assume he is OK with it.

It can be challenging “really” accepting your family and faults sometimes.

I have to cast off this nagging feeling that the GF is “controlling me” as well- in that I am ressisting my natural inclination- to address this issue and say something.

As you guys might imagine, growing up with a highly controlling mother, and a somewhat inept father has left me a bit over-sensitive to feeling controlled myself.

I am a therapist so I have done quite a bit of processing this dynamic out in my life.

Thanks for reading my little delima.

God Bless. 🙂

I thought of this too…

There could be a couple of possible outcomes on this…She might gleefully join in…or…She might feel threatened by being “exposed”…Hard to say…

In the end, ringil, do what is best for your dad.

Peace

I would just say “Oh, sounds like XXX just picked up the phone…hi XXX.” then continue the conversation as before, I don’t believe ignoring something that is wrong is the correct response…and it is wrong of her to sneakily listen in on another’s phone conversation.

If your parents divorced, sounds like your Dad can handle dissent with a woman…he’s an adult, and I wouldn’t worry about it. I also would not be having conversations with my Dad with a “secret” listener.

That is me, however. Hope it works out however you decide.

Amen to that!

She might be listening in to be controlling. But she might also be interested to hear what you have to say. My husband and I share a two family house with his parents, and it has often been difficult for me. I get frustrated when I feel like they’re getting in our business, and my husband says, “Remember, we’re their entertainment.” They also don’t go out much or have much going on in their lives. Something that seems mundane to us is often the most exciting thing in their day.

Do you ever ask to speak to her personally? Do you think she would be receptive if you did want to chat with her? I know it wouldn’t be easy for you either way. But you are right, that sometimes we just need to accept our family how it is, warts and all.
