I want to fast for 10 days, but I really don’t know how. I was wondering if the Church has any recommendations, guidelines, etc. Or if you can help me. 🙂

Whoa, David Blaine, talk to your doctor first! 🙂

Howdy,

I fast for the 40 days of Lent. It does take me a few days to get into the flow, as it were. I would recommend from personal experience not to go overboard. When I was in college, I nearly passed out b/c I went really strict so please be careful.

A few months ago, I typed out some info for a thread on traditional fasting and abstinence, so you might want to view the comments there:

And maybe visit these sites for more tips:

take care,

One should not undertake strict fasting unless he is under the direction of a spiritual director. In this case you might want to find a monk who could help you because I think most diocesan priests would just tell you not to fast.

I fast every wed and fri.
No food after the evening meal of the previous night and then I only drink water until 3pm on Wed and Fri. I eat normal for the rest of the evening.
I did this every day for 2 weeks of Lent except Sundays. Sundays I ate and rejoiced!!
I find this works well for me as I know I will be eating at 3pm.
This way no-one knows in my family, so I don’t look like a “Holy than Thou”.
Fasting works when it is for God not to boast about to others.
God Bless You

I’m on Fridays no meat right now, but my ideal is Wednesday and Friday are black fast (no meat, dairy, fish, or oil). This past lent I eschewed meat, dairy, and fish the entire lent, but left oil because I would have died. No exception for Sundays because I was following the Byzantine fast rules with an Orthodox friend. We went for sushi on Annunciation and Fish and Chips on Palm Sunday.

For Advent, I think I’m going to go black fast the entire time, except Sunday. I might allow fish on Sunday, but not eat meat until Easter.

The apostles taught us to fast on Wednesday and Friday, hence I would recommend starting with that. Start small and work your way up. Do no meat on Wednesday and Friday. Then, when you’re ready, get rid of eggs, and then milk and butter. Then if you can, get rid of fish, and then oil. Don’t just start.

I would also warn about your fast making you want to be gluttonous. I stopped doing the black fast on Wednesdays and Fridays because I found it just made me tend to overeat o Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and anticipate eating too much. Lent, however, was glorious this past time.

I also like to give up sugary drinks. Not only is it bad for your weight to have a constant flow of sugar into your digestive tract, it’s also a good and simple thing to give up.

If I were Pope, I would exhort people to give up meat, soft drinks, and alcohol the entirety of Lent except Sundays, as is our tradition, and to do even more Friday - possibly not eat until 3 pm.

Dear Windfish,

It is very admirable of you to want to taken on extra disciplines and I don’t mean that condescendingly. However, as Tradycja commented, you should only take on a serious fast, discipline or penance after speaking with a spiritual director. Speak to a priest you know to be serious minded and explain why you want to take this on.

When I was young one lent I tried a 12-hour fast. I did not abstain, but I would also make sure that I have nothing for 12 hours, not even water. I remember one time I was so thirsty I went to a drinking fountain and just gargled the water to keep my mouth hydrated. This was in the Philippines where Lent usually is the beginning of Summer (by the first day of Spring the Sun is directly over the equator, meaning its directly over the tropics, so it would be summer already for tropical countries). It was hard but I was able to do it because I was young back then. I do not know if I can do it today. I was 19 I think when I did it.

Fasting is hard, it challenges you physically and psychologically. Make sure physically you are able. God appreciates sacrifice but remember that suicide is a sin. So do not get into this if your health will not take it. After that, set up the rules of your fasting. Do you take one full meal? Do you take no full meals but the equivalent of a snack, two or three times a day? Do you eat meat or bread only? There have been several ways to fast. Perhaps you can adjust it not only with what you desire, but with what your body can take.

Catholics fast for various reasons.

Why do YOU want to fast?

ok… first… you do not want your first fast to be 10 days.

I would suggest buying an Auger style Juicer and consume only water and fresh squeezed vegetable juices.

The important part especially if you are going 10 days is how you break the fast.

People have died or suffered medical problems from fasting wrong. Mostly from breaking the fast incorrectly.

Start with a 2 day fast. then a 3 or 4 day fast and so on.

A good fresh juice fast is realy the way to go. If you do buy an Auger style Juicer the juice is only good for 2 days after juicing. Never drink fresh juice with meat.

When you break the fast make sure you know what you need to eat. No meat, no nuts, etc. Think… I am starting my stomach up. Do it smoothly and slowly.

Fasting can be very dangerous. Or it can change your life.

Search the net read some books.
