Dear Catholic Answers Forum Users,

Today, I went to confession, and I experienced God’s love and mercy! 😃

Today, I also got a penance that is different from anything I usually get. Part of it involves praying an extra Rosary and asking God for goodness, happiness, good thoughts, etc. I am pretty sure that it is only one extra Rosary, so the question is how should I go about doing it. For example, on Wednesday I pray the Glorious Mysteries, so can I just do a second Rosary but pray the Luminous or Sorrowful or any others on the second Rosary. Or is there another way I can do this. I want to do my penance correctly so I won’t worry about it.

Thank you all, and have a nice 4th of July! God bless America!

Sincerely in Christ,

Pray the rosary using any of the mysteries that your wish, but do it as soon as possible. Absolution is not effective until the penance is completed.

Absolution does not depend on your penance. Your sins are forgiven upon reception of absolution.

You should to do the penance, but you do not need to in order to be absolved. If you find it onerous you could ask the priest for a different one.

Did the priest ask you to pray an ADDITIONAL rosary. If not, any of your rosaries would fulfill the penance.

That is most absolutely INCORRECT. As long as the penitent went to confession with the intent to do the assigned penance, absolution is valid the moment it is pronounced. It is not dependent on the penance being completed.

It sounds like it wasn’t specified in your penance; so, just pray any set of mysteries… and don’t stress over it. 😉

Hi there. I think it’s important to remember that the designation of certain mysteries for the days of the week is just one suggested way of praying the Rosary. It is not set in stone. You can choose any set of mysteries you want on any day of the week. I see WAY too many Catholics who are really obsessive about this; almost as bad as those who assume that one has to kneel for the Rosary or for all of Eucharistic Adoration.

Holy Mother Church has wisely opted to allow Catholics a bit of latitude on private devotions and postures for prayer and the like.

Just choose a set of mysteries, pray your penance and be at peace.

Correct.

A problem here is that we didn’t assign the penance. If we don’t understand a penance, we should ask Father to clarify.

You’ve told us Father told you to pray an “extra Rosary” for special intentions. I would interpret that just as you have, and I would try not to get too legalistic about it. What matters is your intention to do the penance, and to open your heart to God’s graces.

My favourite way to think about the mysteries of the rosary, is to align them with whatever emotion you are in the grip of at the time. For example, if praying for guidance or illumination, The Luminous Mysteries. If you are close to despair or are dreading some event, The Sorrowful. If you are delivered from something that was causing you strife, or had a reason to be especially grateful to God, The Glorious.
The only ones I have trouble saying are The Joyful, I always find it hard to be joyous.

But I’ll get there with God’s help,
God Bless,

Hey, that’s a good idea! It’s really a great way to unite ourselves to Jesus and Mary, and find in our lives something that interacts with theirs.

For penance, I’d probably choose the Sorrowful Mysteries, but that is just me. One, I have their order memorized (I’m still working on the others) and two I just think that the Sorrowful Mysteries go best with penance.
