I am currently going through RCIA with the full intention of becoming a Catholic. I was raised in a Mormon family and when through all the usual Mormon rites growing up. Today, I’m facing a couple dilemmas.
  1. Is it okay for me to take the Mormon sacrament (their form of communion) until I get baptized as a Catholic, just while I’m visiting family? I find it an awkward situation and never know whether I should or not.
  2. Is it okay for me to accept blessings from my father, even though he isn’t a Catholic?

Since you no longer believe in the Mormon religion, it would be wrong for you to participate in their ceremonies. This will send the message to your family that you are still a believing mormon, which is a lie.

First of all, I am Methodist, not Catholic…However, this has come up before in the past, and what I know from that is:
  1. You should NOT participate in communion in a Mormon ceremony. (Because it would be a lie, saying that you believe as they do).
If this helps, you have company… I have had to disappoint my fundamentalist Baptist family members by refusing to receive communion with them if I happen to be visiting on their communion Sunday. (Becasue I don’t believe as they do, and I cannot in good conscience.).

I would refrain from the Mormon communion sacrement.

Its ok to accompany them to their Church as respect to your family, as long as they understand your beliefs and that your accompanying them is not an endorsement of their faith.

I think you can accept your father’s blessing - I accept my Jewish father’s blessing. 🙂

Good luck in RCIA (i’m in RCIA currently too).

Blessings,

Brian

Thanks! I figured I probably shouldn’t be taking the Mormon sacrament if I desire to become Catholic. Next time I visit my family, I’ll have to let them know I won’t be taking their sacrament and why.

Thanks, Brian. I appreciate your (name removed by moderator)ut and I’m glad that there are others dealing with similar circumstances. I also felt it was okay for me to receive my father’s blessings if when he desires to give them. I just wasn’t sure if there was an official Catholic stance on receiving blessings from members of other faiths.

If anyone has something more to say about that, I’d love to hear your opinions.

We are to honor our father and mother. The blessing of one’s father is always a good thing, no matter his faith.
