So how are guys supposed to act when it’s that time of the month? And ladies, how do you want your man to act? Thank you.

In relation to what? What do you mean? About emotions, sex, hiding in your man-cave? 🙂

Understanding and sympathetic.

For example:

Wife is on verge of emotional breakdown.

Bad response: “I hate it when you get like this! It turns you into a monster and you are impossible to live with!!!”

Good response: “I know you are feeling lousy and not like yourself. Let’s talk about this another time. I brought you home your favorite Ben and Jerry’s and I thought we could watch Pride and Prejudice together. You know, the good one with Colin Firth. All five hours! Can I give you a foot massage?”

👍

All of the above.

Thank you. Is suggesting taking pills for it a big no-no?

Oh I don’t know, it depends on the month, sometimes I want attention, sometimes I want to be left alone. Sould I post a sign or will you ask with sincere thoughtfullness?

I do know slamming doors is never helpful.

Not necessarily! I love it when my husband kindly hands me two advil and says “I know you’re not feeling well.” That’s very considerate.

Pride and Prejudice? But I rather watch a Star Wars marathon (you know, the good one with the original movies).

😃

I really think it depends on the woman in question. We aren’t all the same and act the same way–even that time of month. For example, my mood doesn’t usually change but boy I do kind of crave sweets! And I get cold too, so letting me raise the thermostat or bringing me warn fuzzy slippers and my bathrobe to bundle up in while watching Episode IV would provide comfort. But the woman you are with might be different–so if there is a particular woman in mind, ask her.

Just saw the thing about pills. Would the pills be for pain or for mood. If for mood, maybe suggest them after that time of month is over (in a nice way). Pain, I think what Em already suggested is perfect.

Ditto. Or even a "can I get you anything? Advil? Chocolate? A double shot of Jack Daniels? ". :yup:

My husband handles that time well, which, given how incredibly nasty I can get sometimes (to the point that I don’t even want to be around me LOL), is amazing.

He will rub my back, take care of things around the house if I am too tired (I can have awful cycles that leave me totally wiped out for about 2 days sometimes).

He generally knows that if I am super quick to snap, then it must be “about that time.”

Just be caring, understanding, and patient.

I’d go for a star wars marathon, too!

But don’t underestimate P&P. That movie is powerful. It put me into labor once. 😃

Like it is any other day and you realize that she is the love of your life.

ROTFL… good to know. Maybe they should have copies of it in the delivery rooms to help speed things along 😃

Actually, I loved the book. I probably should watch the movie at some point.

I’m really pretty clueless when it comes to things like this. I think what she told me is that it’s relatively mild for her now compared to years earlier. Probably should’ve paid better attention when she told me. But I think I’m doing OK so far this time. She just told me that I’m great. I’ll take that as a positive sign.

And if my calculations are correct, when she meets my parents in a month, it’s going to coincide with her that time of the month. I definitely want my parents to like her, and I definitely want her to like my parents. So yea, a little nervous.

For me, the main thing was that he recognized and validated that what I was experiencing was a real physical condition with an explainable cause (hormonal levels), not an emotional weakness, or a psychosomatic condition that I was making up.

It was also helpful when he didn’t try to blame me for my symptoms. I would not have been pleased to hear him say, “You really should cut down on fatty foods and chocolate for a week before your period, and also do more physical exercise. And stop getting so stressed out about your work. And get more sleep. If you did all this, you would probably help reduce your symptoms.”

Pills? It depends. One “pill” that can provide a lot of relief for women with painful or difficult cycles is the birth control pill. I think a lot of women are not open to this, or any prescription med, and I don’t blame them. OTOH, if the symptoms are severe (e.g., violent or suicidal tendencies), well, I can see why a husband would urge his wife to please be open to the idea of taking “the pill” to relieve these really bad, scary, and potentially destructive symptoms.

But the main thing is, just validate what your wife is going through. It’s no fun.

I’ve never had issues with PMS or anything other than cramping, so for me, act normal!

With my ex-girlfriend it was really just reading her mood and being attentive. Sometimes she wanted to be more left alone and sometimes she needed to be spoiled and have lots of attention. Just pay attention to the clues she is giving you and do your best to be as understanding as possible.

And yes ladies, sometimes that is very very hard. So do give us some credit for trying. 😃

I prefer my husband to act normal and treat me as normally as possible. I really don’t want any extra treatment, even though I may be having a bad day.

hahahaha! You’re my kind of gal. The A&E version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is hands down, the best version. Fortunately, my husband really likes Pride and Prejudice. He loves Mr. Bennett and Mr. Collins the most. He’s always quoting Mr. Bennett. heehee!

I think my husband has learned that something similar to the “good response” keeps me from going ballistic. I just think if a man knows his wife will be a bit hormonal during that time of the month, he just needs to be understanding and maybe even stay away if he can see there will be a melt down. I’ve even warned my husband to stay away from me if I can tell I’m in a mood. He doesn’t deserve to be attacked by my sharp tongue.
