How should we address a transsexual?

For example, with Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner. Should we refer to this person by the preferred name? And what about he v. she? Should we be “nice” and refer to the person as instructed, continue referring to that person by the sex “assigned at birth,” or something else?

If talking with someone directly, I can only recommend calling that person by the name you are asked to use. If referring to that person in writing (such as an opinion piece), give a brief explanation of both names and then refer to the person by the last name. (In the case of Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner, after explaining the dual names then refer to this person as “Jenner.”) As for he/she, one solution might be to avoid using the pronoun altogether.
