How sinful and evil must the world be before you view it as corrupt and miserable?

I was shocked after I saw the results of this poll. I’m the guy who created the thread “how is virtue possible in a sinful world” and I’m the only answerer so far who answered “yes, but only somewhat.”

Irony.

My reason: the world was built absolutely pure as God intended. By original sin, our nature is distorted. When man finds his God, he frees himself from the corruption and misery of a society which promotes sin. God is still present in this world, so it can’t be entirely corrupt and miserable as long as people are willing to reject the world.
👍 Anyone would think Jesus achieved nothing… and didn’t promise to be with us until the end of the world…

Wanting to say something positive, I am reminded of a quote from Thomas Merton:

I am no Thomas Merton; I see suffering in people’s eyes. That said, my heart resonates with the truth expressed here, making me want to sing, Hallelujah!
That is a great piece you quoted. I can relate to that and feel like that when I come out of Confession. I feel connected with my fellow man, in a joyous way and appreciate the wonder that is humanity, with all its flaws.

Alas, what a life is this, where trials and sorrows never cease, and where all things are full of snares and foes! For when one trial or temptation departs, another takes its place; and even while the conflict rages, other troubles arise, innumerable and unexpected.

How can we love life, when it holds so much bitterness, and is subject to so many sorrows and calamities? How, indeed, can that be called life, which breeds death and pain in such full measure?
-The Imitation of Christ, Book 3, Chapter 20

We are the lights of the world. It is our job to make it better. Part of our responsibilities is to spread love and charity to others. Evil wins when good men do nothing.

IF you see evil and misery in the world, then you need to ask yourself, how can I help solve this problem, what more can I do to make things better. IF you are not a part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.
