How some evangelicals are challenging a decades-long stance of blanket support for Israel’s government

JERUSALEM — Lynne Hybels is revered for her work helping the impoverished around the world, but some people view her as dangerous.

Hybels, cofounder with her husband of one of the nation’s largest churches, has been called a heretic and an anti-Semite for her efforts to build bridges between Palestinians and Israelis in the Middle East.

Hybels is among a small number of influential evangelicals who are challenging a decades-long stance of blanket evangelical support for Israel’s government. They are taking trips to the Middle East, not only to visit biblical sites but to engage with modern-day Palestinians and Israelis in conversations centered more around modern politics than ancient texts. They are organizing conferences and writing publicly in an attempt to discern a new role for Christians in bringing an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Gradually, their ideas are taking hold, especially with young evangelicals.

Most “evangelical” Christians have no problem with this. Arabs are an important part of Israel and about 20% of the population is Arab (over 1,000,000) who live in Israel, and enjoy the prosperity of the Jewish nation. Some even serve in the military IDF and one Arab (who is also Muslim) is actually a key military leader in the IDF leadership. Today, more and more Arabs, are joining the Israeli IDF and do so because they value the life that their families have under Israeli government. Netanyahu himself has just recently stated that the Arabs have a key role in Israel and it is essential that good relationships exist between the Arabs in Israel and the Jewish people. Evangelicals pray daily for the peace of Jerusalem. Over the years our church has aside over 70 million dollars to help the Jewish people.

Based upon scripture, evangelicals recognize that Israel is God’s first born, has a unique destiny, and the time is coming when God will deal with Israel again. God did not re-gather the Jewish people in the land He gave them by accident, but according to His plan and purpose. And God did not regather them in one place just so they can be exterminated by the Arab nations that repeatedly call for the extermination of Israel and all the Jewish people. The notion of “occupied territories” by Palestinians is a myth – just check scripture.

Their regathering in the latter days for the last time was vividly described in Ezekiel, invoked by Ben Gurion in 1948, and, according to scripture the Jews will never relinquish that property that belongs to God and given to the Israeli nation. The scripture also tells us that the Jews will go through “judgment” (e.g., “time of Jacob’s trouble” (Jer), the “Great tribulation” (Matt 24) due to their “offence” which is the tragedy of all human history. In the next holocaust 2 out of 3 Jews will be killed (Zec), as Hitler killed one of every three.

Scripture also says that in order for Jesus to return, the Jews as a nation must recognize and repent from their “offence” and ask Him to return, Hosea 5:15, and Matt 23:39 are just 2 of several scriptures below. Almost every century some group of people inspired by Satan try to wipe out the Jews which has been part of Satan’s plan to thwart the plan of God as that plan is revealed in scripture. The latest group are the believers of Islam.

“I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.”

“For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. “
