How strict are the rules for the 54 day novena

Instead of following the strict format of Joyful-Sorrowful-Glorious plus specific prayers and a prayer at the end of each decade, can I instead simply pray in the order rotation of Joyful-Luminous-Sorrowful-Glorious and say simply “Mary, my intention is so and so for this novena. Thank you.”
