Now that I have had my dinner and have more time I will give a detailed answer to this post.🙂
Im glad you brought this up, because Peter translates from greek to english as a small pebble while the rock that Jesus was talking about translates as a large substructure,
In Greek, the line would have read “You are Petros and upon this petra I will build my Church.”

You are right Petros is a pebble, petra is a big rock. But that difference was in ancient, Attic Greek. By the1st century which is when the Gospel of Matthew was writen, what was in use was Koine Greek and petros and petra then were synonymous with “rock”.

But the thing is Jesus was not speaking in Greek but in Aramaic. In Aramaic there is only one word for rock , “kepha” which the greeks rendered as “Kephas’” which became “Cephas” in the Bible.

So what Jesus said was “Thou art Kepha and upon this kepha I will build my Church”. In straight English it reads “Thou art Rock and upon this rock I will build my Church”.

So why was it translated to petros and petra? Well, Greek grammar is different to Aramaic grammar. In Greek some nouns have gender. The greek word for rock, petr-a, is a feminine noun. But because Simon is male, they have to change the ending of the noun to to 'os" to make it male, so it becomes “petr-os” which was already used to mean rock during Matthew’s time.
and from our understanding that the church is the body of Christ as he told us, it is on this statement and his people he will build his church.
You are not making sense here.

First you say that the Church is the Body of Christ. That’s clear enough and I agree.

Then you said “it is on this statement and on his people that he will build hisChurch”. In this second phrase you are in effect saying that Christ “will build the Body of Christ upon the Body of Christ”.

Que?
Also during where they were standing was on a boulder and the gates of hedes was believed to be a river. It is always the context that makes scripture so important.
And what precisely is the context here? Where is the context you are talking about? How do you relate the gates of hades which is a river to your above statement?

Now, in Ceasaria Philippi there is this massive rock which stands over a cave. The pagans believed that this cave is a gateway to hades or to the underworld. Nearby is a temple which they used to make sacrifices to the greek god Pan, the god of the shepherds.

So here you have a cave which pagans believe to be the gateway to hades/hell. Christ guarantee therefore that the gates of hell will not prevail against his Church takes on a special meaning.

And saying this while they were standing next to the temple of Pan, the god of the shepherds, he is in effect transforming the idolatry of Pan to the true worship of Him, the Eternal Shepherd, under his shepherd here on earth, Peter, to whom in John 21:17 he will entrust his sheep.

If you go to this ( Stephen Ray Photos ) website you will see photos of this rock and the cave and the temple.
You are right I do not have a religion, but that does not mean I am not christian or catholic, but I am those in their real meaning (Christ-like,part of the universal body of Christ)
I am not saying you are not Christian. But by saying you do not have a religion, YOU are saying you are not Christian, because Christianity is a religion.

And you are saying that “you are those in their real meaning, Christ-like.” Well, just going by your earlier post, I and many will disagree with your claim of being Christ-like. You have just recently called the entire Catholic Church stupid just by the mere fact that we are Catholic.

Now do you think Christ would have done that?

Also, by saying that “you” are Christ-like is by itself the height of pride, that terrible sin of Adam, that got us into this terrible mess.

I believe though that you are Christian and sincere in your belief. Just totally misguided.🙂 🙂

If you were well educated you wouldnt be catholic.

The point I was getting into was not that there werent Christians, the point that I was getting into is the “real” church, the “real” church was underground and kept secret. The orthodox church was controlled by Russia, you had a limit on the size of your congregation, you were to report of any members of the underground church, you had to preach what they told you, you were generally not allowed to have any children because they wanted to mold the young minds towards athiesm. But you must of known all this since your so well educated.
You are accusing Catholics of not being educated - Ha!

Obviously English is not your first language, otherwise you would not make fundamental grammatical errors!

🙂

Lets study the statement I made “If you were educated you wouldnt be catholic”

The first church was Jewish for thousands of years, then Jesus came along and died and when he did he destroyed that church, now the church is the body of Christ that is his believers. Jesus’s death tore the veil so that we could have relationship and not religion. Then the catholic church came around an was built out of brick and morter and is no different than that which Jesus destroyed. So, again I will say that if you were educated you would get rid of religion for relationship.

You never understood this because you were too busy trying to scold me, remember the fruits of the spirit and “gently restore”
There is no such thing as a Jewish church!

FollowTheWay,

It appears that you may be sincere for Christ. Your teaching is very weak though and ignorance of Christ is not good. You may take this as being very negative. I do not mean it negative. I mean it constructively. Your posts shows not only a lack of knowledge of the Bible and the history of Christianity and Catholicism. It shows a lack of charity. The Catholic Faith is not built of brick and mortar. It is based upon the teachings of Christ and our own self sacrificing love for Christ. Many Christian denominations focus their faith upon themselves. The world is good and God will give me everything I want. That is not how the world works. Christ sacrificed for others and to follow Christ means we also have to sacrifice for others. Everyone will suffer in this world. It is the price of our freewill choosing sin. Death is also the consequence of sin being in this world. Do you sacrifice for your fellow man? I do not mean tithing some money? I mean truly sacrificing. If you do than that it is a good start?

The early Church was Catholic. Read the writings of Irenaus, Justin, Polycard and Ignatius. Their belief was the same as Catholics hold today. Several of these people were taught directly by the Apostles. Do you truly believe you can read a document 2,000 years later and understand it better than the people that were taught by the disciples. Have you ever taken the time to read the Didache? Many believe the Apostles wrote this document and it predates the Bible as it was written around the year 70. Did you know that this document matches current Catholic teaching?

Lastly, the person I mentioned above died for the Catholic Faith. Justin was beheaded, Polycarp burned and then stabbed at the stake. Note Polycard a Catholic had such faith that they had to stab him with a sword as the flames were not harming him. Ignatius was fed to the lions. As the lions approached he prayerfully knet and prayed to Christ. They all died for the Catholic faith. You judge our faith as brick and mortar. Do yu truly believe these three men died for a building. When Justin Martyr stood before the Emperor did he not state his Catholic faith proudly and with his students accepted death. Did not Ignatius not only accept death he embraced it. Have you read any of their writings. I have. They are Catholic.

Again, I believe you are sincere; however, not educated concerning Christ. I challenge you to read the writings of the Church Father’s. What do you have to lose. If it is rubbish you can come back and prove us all wrong. If they, that were taught by the Apostles, have a pure and good faith you will understand that the Faith is Catholic. I was a Protestant and understand the many myths given people via Pastors the TV etc. Ignorance of Christ is not good.

O for mercy’s sake.

How long will the absolutely discredited, linguistically unsustainable claim that “Petros” means “small pebble” linger to cloud this point?

How long will people to continue to purvey the absurd notion that for Catholics, the Church is “bricks and mortar?”

If the Catholic Church were what you *think *it is, Catholics would run from it faster than the speed of summer lightning.

When something sounds too ridiculous to be true, it probably is.

It will linger for as long as people remain afraid of the Truth:)
