How to announce to my family I am no longer Catholic?

Sorry I stepped away for a bit!

Obviously there was a lot of replies to this, and I don’t remember what everyone said, but I agree with ClearWater and John Martin. It’s not about bashing anyones beliefs or trying to convince others of mine, but it’s about the anxiety of expressing to my family that I no longer share their beliefs. I love my family dearly but I don’t want this to make them change the way they feel about me. I want them to love and accept me just as much as they do now. I guess the only way I will find out how they will react is to just tell them. And I know I have no control over how people feel or what their response will be, but I just don’t want them to worry about me or think that something bad will happen to me. I don’t want them to feel like they failed me or anything or just have any type of sad or bad feelings. But I want to be fair with them and I don’t want to feel like I am living a lie or being a hypocrite. This has been weighing down on me for a while now and I just want to come clean and lift the veil.
Well, then you’ve just answered your own question. Don’t bash anyone’s beliefs and don’t try to convince others that their beliefs are wrong. If your parents ask you to do “Catholic stuff”, just tell them and be done with it.

I figured that’s what you wanted.

It’s understandable.

In my family, it is SO hard for me to express my beliefs. I know a previous post was saying that, because we are adults, no one can force us to go to church, believe, etc., and that’s true.

However, like in my family, I am the youngest of the girls. Although I am 50 YEARS OLD, I guess, at least some of them, they probably remember when I was little. It becomes sort of like a habit, as well, with parents. I’m not a parent, but that’s how one of my sisters explained it to me, that parenting becomes sort of automatic, even…can continue WAY into adulthood, as if we were still children, at times.

As a result, I often deliberately hide what’s going on with me. Well, when I moved to Mexico, I didn´t hide that, but I had 2 of my sisters telling me I was making a terrible mistake. I once visited Ecuador, and again, one of my sisters, and my mother, were on the phone, trying to talk me out of it!

It reaches a point, though, that really, when we are adults, we should be able to make some of our decisions about our OWN lives without fear!

Now, if that family would LET her, that would be best. If they wanted to persuade her, I honestly believe if they would say something like, “You know what you’re doing. It’s YOUR decision”, they would be MUCH more persuasive, even if they wanted to try to talk her out of it, later! It’s ironic, actually.

It’s like when people try to force me to lose weight…before I’m ready. If they will NOT accept me as I am, FIRST, it’s as if they lose something. However, if they ACCEPT me …AS I AM, I sometimes lose weight, on my own…but I like whatever decision about MY life to be MY decision. My life…my decision. Their life…their decision.

If someone forces religion on us, even if we agree, it’s as if it is not allowed to be our own decision. It needs to be HER decision, either way.

If someone tries to force us to do almost anything…we can want to resist…dig in our heels, say “no”, even if they’re right! However, if the person is allowed to decide, without pressure, they often make better decisions…sometimes, come around to it, on their own.

Well, then you’ve just answered your own question. Don’t bash anyone’s beliefs and don’t try to convince others that their beliefs are wrong. If your parents ask you to do “Catholic stuff”, just tell them and be done with it.
I never bashed anyones beliefs. I simply stated a little bit of my own concerns with the church. I never accused anyone of being “wrong”.

Telling them is exactly the issue. It’s not EASY to tell someone that you no longer consider yourself part of the church. But just because it’s not easy doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be done. But it’s the telling them part that I am struggling with. I know that no one can give me a definite answer to my question, but I just wanted to express my anxieties and fears. At least it feels good to talk about it to SOMEONE since I’ve been holding it in for so long, even if people don’t agree with me.

ClearWater- Communication is something that is definitely broken in my family. We never tell each other how we really feel. We will tell other family members but we don’t tell THAT person directly. It’s a huge issue and I struggle with it all the time. I’ve basically been taught to suppress emotions and feelings and it’s caused a lot of problems in not just my family, but my friendships, relationships, work life, etc. I hope that when I do get the courage to tell them how I feel, that hopefully it will break some walls down and that we can be more honest with each other. Maybe it will also help me be more honest with my feelings in my other relationships. Yes this is about falling away from religion, but it goes much deeper than that.

Actually, in your original post, you stated that Catholics aren’t allowed to think for themselves and that you think your sister is dilusional because she assumes that you are practicing chastity. If you think about it, both of those statements could be seen as “bashing”.

It’s unfortunate that you feel that your family doesn’t respect or value your opinions and thoughts. You might consider the possibility that you are attributing your experiences with your family to the teachings of the Church. Most Catholics would not profess that they are inable to think for themselves or question any aspect of their faith. Most faithful Catholics would be more likely to cite a release from guilt to be a positive aspect of Catholicism.

Well that was not my intent. I was simply stating my opinion. If you state an opinion that is different from your own, that is not bashing. I was just saying how I personally felt when I was in the Catholic church. As far as my sister, well, she is delusional and naive on a lot of things, but I was really just laughing at myself more than anything because I am far from a virgin, and well honestly, there really aren’t that many 32 year old virgins out there lol.

What is the definition of “bashing” then. If you are going to not bash, you have to have an understanding of what bashing is. As I understand it, the word “bashing” usually describes making negative statements attacking person’s intentions, intelligence, or credentials, rather than debating the content of their arguments. Snooty debaters who are big on following rules would call such statements “ad hominum attacks”.

If you were going to have a discussion with someone about why you disagree with the Church, it would be better to stick to why you think chastity isn’t important, rather than calling those who practice it dilusional. You might explain what specific teachings of the Chruch you disagree with and why, rather than state that Catholics don’t think for themselves. If you did that, you might have a good conversation and express what you think without hurting feelings too much. However, if you call names and make claims about the intelligence of yoru family members, it will be seen as “bashing”.

Vicki, I am praying for you. I know this can’t be easy. I think you can respectfully tell them you are no longer practicing. At the end of the day the choice is yours. My family was supportive when I converted, I still go to church with them, they also attend mass with on occasion. I say follow your heart and your bliss and your joy. You can respect your families belief without having to follow it.

Yes…often it DOES go deeper.

Would you care to talk about it?

Sounds like you’ve been repressing a lot, possibly for years! That takes its toll over the long haul. It’s not easy to keep our feelings bottled up 24/7, is it?

It takes a tremendous amount of energy to keep secrets. It’s much easier to let it out, tell the truth, even a difficult truth.

I know we’re also not supposed to lie, but in some cases, in some families, it’s more than understandable, due to some people’s reactions. They can overreact to a point that it makes it seems much easier to just keep it all to ourselves, even lie, all in order to try to keep “the peace”.

Although, some have said , “Peace is more than the absence of war”, Diana Jenkins (or for “war”, I would, in this case substitute the word “conflict”).

In my family, they routinely overstep their bounds. They tell me…what religion I should believe, what politics I should follow, how I should vote, what to eat, and where to live!

It’s a BOUNDARY issue, as well. They are, by trying to force you to believe something don’t, overstepping their bounds.

If you insisted they believe YOUR beliefs, you would be overstepping yours.

They are overstepping THEIR boundaries. Their reaction is probably understandable, but, in some ways, they are out of line. They need to allow you to live your life, even make some mistakes. They have lived theirs, made their mistakes. At least, if you make a mistake, it would then be your OWN! lol 😉

I really don’t know why you keep arguing with me and putting words in my mouth. I never said that people who practice chastity are delusional, I was saying it was delusional of my sister to think that I was still a virgin at 32. Delusional means having unrealistic beliefs, and I think that in general, a 32 year old virgin is quite unrealistic. I never said she was stupid for thinking that way, just that it was naive and pretty unlikely. I always presented my ideas as opinions and feelings, never fact. If I said something like “The Church is stupid and everyone who is Catholic is an idiot for having such ridiculous beliefs and I am right and everyone else is wrong” then yes, you can accuse me of bashing. But I never said such things.

I feel like you are looking for a fight and no matter what I say you are still going to try and argue with me. I just really don’t appreciate when people try to put words in my mouth. If you feel like I am bashing or offending you personally, then just leave this thread. Or if you really want to hear what issues I have with specific teachings instead of me making general statements about my opinions on how I felt with the church, then let me know.

Also, communication… HOW you communicate (indirect communication rather than direct communication) is a problem.

Family counseling addresses these kinds of issues. Although, many families aren´t open to it, unfortunately, and the families often in most need of help are precisely the ones least likely to get it.

It’s pretty bad. My mother and father clearly don’t get along and haven’t for a long time, but they are both so stubborn that neither of them talk about their feelings with each other. My mother just gives everyone the passive aggressive silent treatment instead of talking things out. And she comes to ME about issues with my father. I am her child, not her marriage counselor. I tell her that talking to me about the issues she has isn’t going to fix anything and that she needs to talk to him but she refuses to talk to him. So she’s been stewing in anger and resentment for years. I’m sure they both have. I know I have communication problems too, but I never want to get as bad as my parents, which is why I am really trying to work on them now and break the bad habit of silence and ignoring problems.

DANG! Sounds hard!

That happened in my family, as well.

Now, it’s so hard that I’m actually out of the country, and I try not to even go back. Times I do, my boundaries are completely trampled. I don´t feel strong enough to defend my own boundaries with them!

They can defend theirs, not only defend them but overstep their boundaries, sometimes severely. In order to keep my sanity, I find it just easier to stay away, talk about neutral issues. When I try to confide about my life, they tend to be rather critical and judgemental, not accepting of me, or my decisions, treat me as if I were a small child, talk down to me.

So generally, as a result, I don´t tell them anything I’m doing, and I don´t like to talk to them or visit. I feel I have to keep a bunch of secrets or watch WWIII erupt!

I did not put words in your mouth. I quoted the exact words you wrote. And I explained the difference between “bashing” and discussing the issues. If you are interested in expressing the reasons you are no longer practicing your faith without hurting your family’s feelings, then you should avoid the name-calling and making statements that Catholicism doesn’t allow for free-thinking. You can continue to argue and say that such statements aren’t confrontational because you think they’re true, or because you didn’t say they were true, you only said you think they are true. 🤷 (Whatever the heck that means.) However, I don’t think that will help you deal with your family.

If you want to discuss or debate specific teachings of the Church, the forum is an excellent place to do that. However, the ad hominum arguments won’t go far. Perhaps having such discussions will help you when talking to your family.

i can relate. I’ve had questions about the faith, too, probably similar reasons. Though, i’ve still managed to go to mass on sundays and holy days. Still, it´s hard. I understand. Though, if you say that to people here, some will get angry with you. I won´t, though.

I am seeking, too. I don´t feel qualified to answer, but i won´t get upset for your asking. I allow it. Actually, that was supposed to be the original intent of the forum, was for people with questions on the faith.

With your family, i´d probably say to keep it short and sweet. When they ask you to go to church, say you´re not attending, because…you´ve lost your faith.

I understand what you mean about not wanting you to ask questions or doubt. I´m seeing that right now as you´re talking.

Sometimes, when i have a doubt, people more or less have sometimes done the same thing to me, and i probably have done that to others, as well.

I also think i know what you mean about the guilt and shame. Sometimes, in psychology, we learned guilt wasn´t very helpful…regret, yes, guilt, no. However, some are really into it.

I live in mexico, and here, they still have self affliction for penance. We have people knee walking. I had that as my penance, once, and i remember bleeding from it. I had a friend who got that as a penance, to knee walk across seven churches.

After that, i stayed away from the catholic church for about 10 years. I felt that it almost seemed depressing, at times.

I´ve had some difficult dealings with priests, as well. Once here, i had a priest yell at me in front of everyone for using the wrong hand for communion. It was actually, i think, my first mass in latin america.

Once, someone i know, got yelled at by a priest for wanting to receive communion in the hand, rather than on the tongue.

The environment can feel “cold” in that there is generally a lack of fellowship. A lot of people say fellowship…isn´t important, though…catholics, especially.

I remember my former sister-in-law once was saying someone she knew was trying some protestant denominations, didn´t like them calling at the house, wanting to go over and pray with the person. So, she invited the person to a catholic church, promising that nobody would bother them, and of course, nobody did! So, they loved it!

Here, we generally just come and go.

I´ve talked to some of my former students. I asked one why she left the catholic church, and in a word, she said, “fellowship”. She said she believed fellowship was actually important.

I actually honestly believe that is probably one of the reasons why people are leaving the catholic church. They sometimes don´t feel belonging, can´t fit in. If they have a question, or a doubt, instead of trying to express concern, understanding, caring, empathy, they sometimes flare out in anger, further helping to drive the person away.

I have a lot of questions myself.

Today, people were saying the pope said that there´s no answers in yoga. Now, i didn´t research it or anything, if that even was what he said. However, i practiced yoga for years, and i just had to disagree. They also believe in chastity, truthfulness, non-covetness, non-harming, non-killing.

So, if he actually said that, to me, that´s a falsehood. Yoga, does have some answers. Again, a lot of times, quotes get misquoted. Maybe he didn´t say that. If he did, it pushes me further away, still, because i believe he´s wrong…exaggerating…to a point of falsehood.

I also have other doubts, as well. Like take, euthanasia. There have been true cases where a person is cut in half, screaming to be put out of his misery. The catholic church says it’d be a grave sin to pick up a gun and shoot.

Also, i have a friend of mine who is from a family of twenty. We are told contraception is not okay. I´m from a family of eleven. We were almost a family of fifteen…seventeen including parents. I saw how they suffered.

Sometimes, it concerns me how the church will take a really hard approach, no exceptions.

Someone raised a case of a couple where one, or both, couldn´t consumate the marriage. The civil authorities will allow a couple to marry. I´m told in that case, the church would not. Now, the church says not to live in sin, to get married. If these two try to get married, again, no! So, do you see my point?

I just have several questions, myself, and i also don´t like when i´m not supposed ask, ever doubt, …or else. I don´t think it needs to be that way.

I know i haven´t told my family any of this, for the same reason. I live in mexico. They live in the us, though. I am trying to do what i can…go to church, but i find it harder and harder to believe, especially when i keep crossing paths with catholics who seem to be miserable, in part, because their interpretation of the faith. Some seem to make those around miserable, as well. Some believe suffering is good, that god wants us to suffer.
squeezing note in here: Ask questions from apologist. He will resolve your disquiet. Corporal punishment w penance is not allowed per vatican. It is a local cultural thing. It is like in the phillipines where some get crucified on crosses (yulk). The priest scandal was real. There is beauty in the church. Priests are christs representatives/ministers but they are still sinners saved by grace. You will not agree w all rules of any church you join. But catholicism has most of it correct.
God bless you
