Anybody who makes a stupid claim like that does not deserve a response.

Always remember that when anyone makes any kind of claim the burden is on them to provide proof to back up their claim. It is not up to us to refute baseless silly assertions.

What about the supposed archeological proof that Jesus is buried outside Jerusalem today?

True. But then he resurrected… Bible is the proof on that one. I’ve been to his supposed tomb, (supposed because it looks more like a shrine than an actual burial site…) Church of the Holy Sepulchre. So his tomb is there, but not Him.

Perfectly valid question to ask, let’s think for a minute…

Well, how did this other person’s body get past the temple guards so that the temple could be empty on Easter morning?

Where did this other person’s dead body end up?

This would have required a certain amount of planning, and nobody involved ever broke their silence, even when the material rewards would have been so great?

Further, if this did happen then Jesus was not God, what could have inspired to apostles to all suffer horrifying deaths over a lie that they themselves made up?

After faking the resurrection, Jesus would have eventually died at some point, where is his body?

He preached to so many thousands of people, surely he might have been recognized at some point after he faked the Ascension?

**To the OP: Keep asking these questions and keep seeking the answers. **

I would say, “That’s too bad you think that. What’s for lunch?”

That got me thinking of that great old line from “Batman the Animated Series”…

But more seriously… I don’t think there IS anyone who’s seriously offered that as a theory. Mostly because it holds water as well as a screen door on a submarine would.

Think about it… the Apostles would have had to not only gotten some poor schlub to pose as Jesus on the Cross, put it over on Mary (unless the theorist is so blasphemous as to think She would be in on it…), then snatch the body under the noses of the Roman guards while faking stigmata on Jesus… it makes no sense. It violates Occam’s Razor six ways from Sunday.

I think there is, Pat. I’m admittedly very ignorant about the topic, but it seems to be a theory offered by some Muslims. I don’t know if there are other groups that do as well.

Just do an internet search and you’ll find that it is a theory that is out there.

So…after the impostor was crucified…the real Jesus was speared in the side…had nails hammered through his hands and feet…then walked through walls to greet his Disciples…who then went out to preach the gospel and sacrifice their lives (except John) for an impostor…no doubt the real Jesus wasn’t really taken up to heaven neither…he probably hitched a ride on a UFO and went to live on the planet Venus with Mary Magdalene.

That’s a Muslim belief if I’m not mistaken. They think another thief was dressed like him. In some Islamic mythology they say that only Christ’s shadow was crucified.

I mean, the Chief Priests definitely thought of this - that’s why they got Judas involved. He was the key actor. He positively identified the man. From there the Temple and the Roman state would have no false replacement - they would have this man, the God man they considered a political dissident, hang upon a cross.

The constant attendance of his friends to him throughout the narrative.

The obsession of the entire city of Jerusalem with him.

The lack of pleading on the cross that he was not the right man.

The wounds in the Risen Christ.

…and then all be martyred for it.

Maybe they made up their own martyrdom too, James and Peter and Paul all had other people disguised to look like them.

St. Stephen was a fake when they stoned him. St. Thomas in India too.

My question is whether you have read the Gospels yourself U25? I wonder how anyone who has read them…and then the rest off the New Testament can really have their faith shaken by such a assertion. Read it for yourself my friend and then consider all the good advice that all of us here in this thread have offered you.

If you have further issues I would also suggest Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis in which he examines this kind of thinking.

I, for one, find the idea anything but plausible having read the New Testament and having a gift of faith (however small) I would just love to see these sources that you refer to that you feel have shaken you so much, so please provide them so we can review them and help you.

The Romans removed all clothing from prisoners before they crucified them to further the humiliation, so even that argument would be spurious.

Stuff shakes my faith sometimes, but not this. Rationally it is highly unlikely, for all the reasons other posters have stated. Roman soldiers knew what they were doing. If they crucified the wrong person by mistake, or if (as i have heard some Muslims suggest) they took Jesus down from the cross before he died those soldiers would have paid terribly for it. Forget all this nonsense, all historical sources apart from Islamic ones assert that Jesus dies on the cross. The world’s foremost historical Jesus scholar, who is not even a Christian, asserts that we can say with almost absolute certainty that Jesus lived, died through execution and that his follwers sincerely believed that they saw him after his death.

There is a great book published years ago called “Who moved the stone?”. It is a lawyer’s inquiry into the story of Christ’s death and resurrection. Well worth reading.

I would smile and enjoy the ensuing discussion involving Jesus 2Pac and Elvis having a sandwich in the spacecraft in Area 51. And I would ask the person to elaborate on the conversation those three would have.

Originally, it was a Gnostic claim, precisely a Basilidean one. The Second Treatise of the Great Seth mentions that it was Simon of Cyrene who was crucified, while Jesus was laughing :
For Adonaios knows me because of hope. And I was in the mouths of lions. And the plan which they devised about me to release their Error and their senselessness - I did not succumb to them as they had planned. But I was not afflicted at all. Those who were there punished me. And I did not die in reality but in appearance, lest I be put to shame by them because these are my kinsfolk. I removed the shame from me and I did not become fainthearted in the face of what happened to me at their hands. I was about to succumb to fear, and I according to their sight and thought, in order that they may never find any word to speak about them. For my death, which they think happened, (happened) to them in their error and blindness, since they nailed their man unto their death. For their Ennoias did not see me, for they were deaf and blind. But in doing these things, they condemn themselves. Yes, they saw me; they punished me. It was another, their father, who drank the gall and the vinegar; it was not I. They struck me with the reed; it was another, Simon, who bore the cross on his shoulder. I was another upon Whom they placed the crown of thorns. But I was rejoicing in the height over all the wealth of the archons and the offspring of their error, of their empty glory. And I was laughing at their ignorance.
An extreme form of Docetism.
