How do I explain the seeming contradiction that God is all good and does not cause evil. Yet He asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac? Some family members have left the Church over not being able to accept the God would do such a thing, among other issues.

Hi,

Your family members need to think this one out. Unlike us, God is the author of all life and He alone has the right to take it. Abraham did not have the authority to take his son’s life, but he was obeying God who does. For God to cause us to die is not evil. In fact, it is the way He calls us home to Himself.

Further, He actually took on a human nature like ours and voluntarily suffered and died on our behalf. Such divine love is beyond our ability to fully grasp. You family members need to reflect on this and then again and again and again. We can never reflect on it enough.
