I like Pope Frances response of who are we to judge. My sister is gay and happily married going on 12 years. They are more Christian then most who attend Church every Sunday and give more then they receive.
That is good, of course, but one can still hope that in time they will come to reconsider their rejection of the traditional Christian (and Catholic) teachings concerning sexuality.

Thankyou for the ongoing comments. They are all very helpful!

I continue to pray for the respondents who are in similar situations - as either the loving relative, or the child. 🙂

she once said “How can I accept a church which does not accept me?”
You have received some very very good advise here. If you can find the time, I recommend spending the time watching this talk by Jason Evert, titled “Homosexuality and the Catholic Church.”

My favorite part of the video is when he tells a story where a man he met said something very similar… the video is almost an hour and a half long, but, if you watch the first ten minutes I believe you will be hooked and watch it all.

May God bless you and your family. Love is always the answer. Always.

“How can I accept a church that does not accept me”.

The problem with that statement is that it equates acts to which one is drawn with the person. As though no one could be drawn to a wrong act. Are sexual acts between persons of the same sex good because there are persons who desire them? The Church fully accepts the person, but distinguishes the merits of actions from the merits of the person.

I’m personally not a fan of Jason and the way he explains stuff (but to each his own, I feel that what he says can seem rather ignorant especially if it’s a struggling gay person watching, just my opinion)

So if this video isn’t your child’s cup of tea, OP, I would recommend Fr Mike Schmitz

He has a gay brother who is still struggling hard with the faith, I believe. He has a lot of empathy and love. Imo, it’s one of the best talks on this topic. I don’t know how to put it in words but the way he talks…it’s a person who really cares about the person. Not just a person trying to defend the faith. A person who is trying his best to heal others.

Besides focusing on homosexuality, build her faith in other areas. Why should she care about a church’s opinion on whether she can get married if she doesn’t even believe in its authority? Stuff like the Eucharist or something might open the door. Even if it’s a little bit. Focusing too much on the Church and homosexuality can come across as “trying to change her”, and it might turn her off.

And to end off: don’t expect it to be easy. Your kid desires for romance and a family. This desire is not different from a straight person. So when she sees that she is not “allowed” to have this because of something she cannot control…it hurts. Deeply. It doesn’t seem fair to her. She will struggle with it for a long time. She might have a lot of resentment. Your job is to make sure she has a strong support system with good friends and family. It won’t fix it, but she won’t feel alone in this, at least.
