How to ask HR regarding application status

How do I ask HR in a polite manner regarding my application status? I just want them to tell the truth, whether it is a yes or a no. I emailed the HR person and she said she would follow up with the department manager. I think it’s better for them to be direct and not beat around the bush. Any help in wording my inquiry would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!
 
By the sound of it you’ve already asked.

Leave it alone or the answer will be no for sure.
 
Call them and say you would like to check on the status of your application. HR people can be very vague and privacy orientated, so don’t be surprised or push it if they don’t give you any information. Usually, if it is a “yes” you will know; they don’t contact the others because there are too many and they don’t want the grief and drama explaining the decision.
 
As stated, you already have.

If they are not calling to say yes, then it’s not yes. At least not yet.

Unfortunately most HR departments I’ve encountered are not set up to notify unsuccessful applicants. You should not assume that HR will let you know the outcome of your application no matter what they promise you or tell you. Not to excuse dishonesty but most recruiters are overworked and underpaid and recruiting isn’t always receiving the heaviest of investment from the company. It would be better, IMHO, to simply let applicants know they will only hear about a successful application, but that simply isn’t they way things are done.

I’ve had about 12 interviews in the past year and I’ve received one offer and in one case the recruiter notified me that I was unsuccessful. In every other case I just assumed I was unsuccessful because I never heard anything.

It can be very frustrating to put in all the effort for an interview and then play the waiting game, but you aren’t increasing your odds by bothering anyone. The best thing you can do is put in your best effort and then ramp up your efforts applying for other jobs.
 
Just to add. You also may have started at the beginning of the recruiting process for that particular role. They may still be vetting through candidates. Most managers want to see several folks before making a decision. The Recruiter should be doing a better job of keeping you warm per se. A phone call would not be unwarranted, but don’t get too aggressive

Where I live, unless told otherwise, that is the assumption.

Of course, there are some who will only notify successful candidates even at the interview stage.
(Actually, I had an interview like that last week. Today another candidate told me she got the job, and they didn’t bother to notify the rest of us that we didn’t get it, although there were only a few candidates at that stage.)
Maybe they are thinking they can still contact us if one of their picks doesn’t work out, since they didn’t tell us we’re out of the running.
 
Thank you for the responses. This is my first time to ever follow up for a job application. I haven’t done this for other companies I have applied to.

When they invited me for the exam, I was asked to bring some writing samples for evaluation. This wasn’t posted in the job ad, and the exam was the next day, so I submitted only a few sample. The girl said it was okay.

I now have more samples because I had to write for exams I had for job applications today.

Do you think it is okay to tell this company that I want to work for that I have more writing samples that I can send them for further evaluation? Or would it constitute as badgering?

Also, would it be okay to ask if they have openings for other positions? Or ask if the position I tested for is already closed?
 
You asked once, anything more than that is too much in this situation.

I know waiting is hard, but you need to accept it and leave them alone.
