I dont want to pretend to be humble.
I started praying the prayer of humility(St Therese) and now I want to be a humble servant of God.but how:shrug:

Im a ninth grade student,so its hard to become humble when you have to compete with other students.
I pray Jesus will help me and you.Amen

In my experience, a prayer for humility rarely goes unanswered. Beware though you may not enjoy the experience. Getting humility generally can be a humiliating experience.

Peace, Tom

I agree with others – prayer first.

Then, good resource is St. Benedict’s 12 Steps of Humility

Humility is a challenge because it’s easy to think that you’ve reached the goal, so you don’t have to get more humble. But it doesn’t work that way – we always have to grow in humility. He who humbles himself will be exaulted. The way we make progress in going up to God, is by going down with humility.

The other problem is that people can mistake humility for lack of self-worth or a negative attitude about one’s self. It’s not that, but rather a peaceful and calm assessment of one’s self, seeing one’s self as a creature of God. It’s seeing the truth about ourselves as clearly as possible.

If you’re concerned about being proud, spend a little time with some old people. That will remind you what you have to look forward to.

And don’t worry. Sooner or later, God humbles everyone - whether they’re proud, or they think they’re humble already, living a virtuous life, etc. When you’re young, you think you’ll live forever - and that’s natural because you have your whole life ahead of you. In a few decades, your perspective will change.

From “Of the Imitation of Christ” by Thomas Kempis

“Because as yet thou lovest thyself too inordinately, therefore thou art afraid to resign thyself wholly to the will of others. And yet, what great matter is it, if thou, who art but dust and nothing, subject thyself to a man for God’s sake, when I, the Almighty and the Most Highest, who created all things of nothing, humbly subjected Myself to man for thy sake? I became of all men the most humble and the most abject, that thou mightest overcome thy pride with My humility. O dust, learn to be obedient. Learn to humble thyself, thou earth and clay, and to bow thyself down under the feet of all men. Learn to break thine own wishes, and to yield thyself to all subjection.”

Here are some personal exercises to help with humility:
-Never ride or walk in the middle of the sidewalk; always to one side or the other. Same with sitting on furniture or lying on a bed - always avoid the middle if possible. i do not recommend this for driving in a car when it comes to car lanes. Don’t horse around at other people’s expense here.
-When you open a door, only open it wide enough so you can make your entrance/exit lest the door open wide and you make a grand entrance/exit.
-When you open your mouth to say something make sure you are constructively adding to the conversation and not simply a show of pride. “Oh, i read that.” “Oh, i know what the answer is.” etc. Or if you are making a simple interjection, have it be a statement that shows your futility. “Oh, i make that mistake all the time, too.” “i don’t know the answer to this one.”
-It is not prideful to compete with the others in school. It is prideful to wish you were better without having to do the required work or to wish you had that particular God-given knack. There is nothing wrong with excelling in school, but do the proper work to get there and do not brag about it.
-Pick a subject or hobby that doesn’t interest you. Visit an informational website pertaining to that foreign information. Having to learn something new forces us to realize we do not know everything.
-Do not think you have made any progress in respect to humility until you truly feel as if everyone else is above you.

I’m an almost 12th grade student and I know what you mean 😦 it’s very hard in high school to be humble when everybody else is being cut-throat and competitive, boasting their class ranks and ap scores. You’re not alone! Please don’t forget your ambition to be humble, ESPECIALLY when it’s time for college apps.

Just remember that however well you do in school is due to God and your family. God blessed you with your intellect and your family helped it grow. Doing the best you can is a way of praising God. 👍

And don’t feel like you’re better than anyone else, but it’s rare to see a high school guy with this mindset! Just because you wish to be humble means you’ve been on the right track for a while

Few things you can do but it is not always easy.
  • respect your parents and appreciate them. respect your siblings.
  • respect your friends
  • acknowledge your mistakes
  • happy for your friends if they do better at school than you do.
  • do not download illegal music and video.
  • help out your parents doing chores
  • make your bed neatly
  • go to confession monthly
  • pray a Hail Mary a day. 🙂

Hi! 🙂 I have to say that I am very impressed by your post. For a young man of your age to be thinking about humility says a lot about your character. It’s hard to be your age with all the peer pressure you must encounter. Continue to pray and seek God. I have found also, that just living life gives one humility. Every time I fall or mess up, Christ is always there to forgive and pick me back up. I never fail to come away from those times without a huge dose of humility! I pray you will continue to seek God and grow along your spiritual path. Stay strong! God Bless.

My dear friend

Humility is living in the truth. The truth for us is Gods will. Just do Gods will - no more or less and your humble. We must keep in line with Gods will always if we can because when our will rises above Gods will- pride, and pride comes before the fall. Pride is at the root of all sin. So humility is vital for us.

Hope this helps:thumbsup:

God bless you dear friend:thumbsup:🙂

Humility is seeing ourselves as we truly are - infintessimal compared to God, but so very much loved by Him. The saints considered themselves “nothing”, because they understood that they were made of nothing and all that was good in them was from God, not from themselves. They truly abandoned themselves into God’s arms.

Our Lady was the greatest human who ever existed, except Christ himself. But she humbled herself before God: “behold the handmaid of the Lord”. Her humility did not mean that she did not recognize the good she was given: “all generations shall call me blessed”. Failing to recognize this (and speak of it when appropriate) is a sin against humility too!

Thinking that we are “humble enough” is a sign that we are not humble enough. I think that Our Lady would recognize that even she was not “humble enough”. Why? Because God is infinitely good, and we can never see how little we are compared to Him. Thinking more about God’s greatness and our insignificance (and His gifts to us) is probably better than looking at ourselves under a microscope to see just how humble we are.

accept whatever humiliations come into your life 🙂

and remember that everything comes from God and be thankful

To paraphrase Father Corapi:

Humility is simply acknowldegment of the truth. The truth is that God is the Creator and we are creatures, everything we have comes from God; recognizing you have gifts (a good kind of pride, not hubris) but realizing and admitting that they come from God, this is humility.

Blessed Mother Teresa gave the Missionaries of Charity the following guidelines for practicing humility:
  1. Speak as little as possible about yourself.
  2. Keep busy with your own affairs and not those of others.
  3. Avoid curiosity.
  4. Do not interfere in the affairs of others.
  5. Accept small irritations with good humor.
  6. Do not dwell on the faults of others.
  7. Accept censures even if unmerited.
  8. Give in to the will of others.
  9. Accept insults and injuries.
  10. Accept contempt, being forgotten and disregarded.
  11. Be courteous and delicate even when provoked by someone.
  12. Do not seek to be admired and loved.
  13. Do not protect yourself behind your own dignity.
  14. Give in, in discussions, even when you are right.
  15. Always choose the more difficult task.

To paraphrase Father Corapi:

Humility is simply acknowledgment of the truth. The truth is that God is the Creator and we are creatures, everything we have comes from God; recognizing you have gifts (a good kind of pride, not hubris) but realizing and admitting that they come from God, this is humility.
Yes, and as grace requires cooperation, one must also cooperate with ones intellect to think about the truth and go where it leads, and as Jesus is the Truth, it will lead to Him.

Entertainment is not truth, nor is competition in place of communion and solidarity, nor popularity. These are not untruths but are not the truth and certainly don’t have the level of truth the media makes it out to have, as in sit-coms ( Two and a Half Men?), Disney channel ( Wizards, London Tipton, Yea ME!), sport (Just win, baby!), or going along with untruth to be liked, so pick your friends wisely.
