how did the first Christians become a Christian…my son who is non Catholic is always pointing out people he says are christians. I want to explain to him that most people I know are Christians …

Dont know i really follow what you are asking.
IME the definition of the word “Christian” varies greatly from person to person and many lots dont accept the definition from dictionaries.
Maybe your thinking most people you know are Christians is because you are blessed to seek Gods goodness in everyone, a great thing, you are very blessed.

Yea - I’m not entirely clear on the OP either.

The first people became “Christians” becuase they accepted and followed Jesus Christ in the flesh. Then those disciples, especially the Apostles, preached and converted others to being followers of Christ.
The movement was commonly called “the Way” at first. I beleive it was at Antioch that the term “Christian” was coined.

Today one becomes “Christian” in the same way as they did in the first century. A Conversion of heart, Repentance, Baptism in the Trinitarian form…

Peace
James

Following JESUS assension into heaven, HIS followers were called “Nazarenes” to identify them as followers of JESUS, the Nazarene. Around 35 AD, the term was changed to “Christian” as most of JESUS followers refered to JESUS as “THE CHRIST”. Then around 101-107AD, St. Ignatiaus of Antioch was writing a letter and he used the adjective “catholic” (meaning “universal”) to describe how far and wide and rapidly the faith was spreading. Everyone took that adjective “catholic” and made it a noun by using it from that time util now to describe those who believed in JESUS, but the term “Christian” never fell out of practice and was used simultaneously with “Catholic”.

As more and more splinter groups separated themselves from the Catholic Faith they have used many names, but they commonly describe themselves as “Christian”.

If your son points out “christians” as a way of showing that they live not as they claim, he is correct. There are many proclaimed christians and catholics who enjoy the title but not the life of grace. If your son uses those people as an excuse for not pursuing the christian faith, then that is not a rational position to hold. Anothers bad behavior does not diminish GOD, only the person who behaves badly and the person who joins in. Your son may be joining the bad behavior and using that behavior as his excuse to misbehave.

Bless you Brother, what you say i have looked into in times past and is very good but i think not in all of the narrations the trinity formula is prescribed and would be the foundation of non trinitarians who call themselves Christians. Sorry i cant quote if no one can find i will search for you busy at the moment.

Bless you Bro for your well informed response and for all you do in submitance to Him

I was raised as a Christian and still continue to believe and practice Christianity today.

My background was Protestant ,then, 5 years ago I accepted to become an Orthodox Christian.

In a REAL sense: “Christians ARE MADE” not " born as such…

2ND. Peter 1: 16-21 “For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we heard this voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word made more sure. You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.* First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation***, because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God**

Rom.10: 17 “So faith comes from what is heard, **[MEANING litterally: What is TAUGHT!] **and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ”

Faith is a GIFT from God: READ Matt. Chapter Seven for a fuller understanding; knowing that Jesus desired and Did Found [start] Only One Church [there were temples nd Synagogs…BUT NO CHURCHES at the time], with Only One Faith, based on ONLY One New Covenant [that ONLY the Catholic Chuch FULLY participates in.

**John 10:16 And I have other sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd.

**Acts.20:28 **“Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church [SINGULAR] of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. “

**1 Cor. 1: 10 **"I appeal to you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” [In order to accomplish this requires ONLY One Church and One Faith].

**Eph. 2:19-20 **“So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, [singular] built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; [singular] in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. “

**Eph. 4: 4 -8 “**There is one body [Only One Church] and one Spirit, [Only One set of beliefs] just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, [Only One God] ONLY one faith, [Only One set of doctrine and dogma] one baptism, By water in the Trinity] one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. "

Only today’s CC has the Fullness of TRUTH on ALL matters of Faith and Morals… God say’s so…** [John14:16-17 an john 14:15-19].**

Instead of talking about other people, wouldn’t it make more sense to talk to your son about what it means to him to be a Christian? How might people know he is Christian by looking at his life? It seems like that might be much more useful than pointing out what other people are doing, or believing.

The book of Acts talks about the early church and its spread. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called the synoptic gospels because they cover similar material and they talk about Jesus’ life on earth. God in His human body, the Word of God made Flesh.

In the beginning was the Word (Jesus) and the Word (Jesus) was with God and the Word (Jesus) was God. The Word was made Flesh and dwelt amongst us.
