How to become more humble?

I’m perfect. I don’t need any help with humility!😃

Seriously, I have been reading St. Faustina’s diary, and she set a great example of how to be humble. Her humility was tested severely, and the Lord awarded her greatly for it.
 
Here is what Mother Teresa recommended to the Missionaries of Charity:
  1. Speak as little as possible about yourself.
  2. Keep busy with your own affairs and not those of others.
  3. Avoid curiosity.
  4. Do not interfere in the affairs of others.
  5. Accept small irritations with good humor.
  6. Do not dwell on the faults of others.
  7. Accept censures even if unmerited.
  8. Give in to the will of others.
  9. Accept insults and injuries.
  10. Accept contempt, being forgotten and disregarded.
  11. Be courteous and delicate even when provoked by someone.
  12. Do not seek to be admired and loved.
  13. Do not protect yourself behind your own dignity.
  14. Give in, in discussions, even when you are right.
  15. Always choose the more difficult task.
 
cultivate obedience to the laws of God, of the Church, to just civil law, and to your legitimate superiors. Cultivate cheerful, prompt obedience in a spirit of joy, and eliminate grumbling, malingering, reluctance, excuses etc.

work on seeing Christ in everyone, especially those closest to you, whom you are called to serve by virtue of your vocation in life, and in the poor, the needy (materially, emotionally or spiritually) and those whose personal traits are most annoying to you.
 
I am a member of AA and I got this little card that I find helpful for me. I have a hard time defining humility which makes it real hard to strive for that virtue. So I read this to remind me what a beautiful and necessary virtue it is so here it is:

It is to be at rest when nobody praises me, when I am blamed or despised, it is to have a blessed home in myself where I can go in and shut the door and kneel to my Father in secret and be at peace, as in a deep sea of calmness, when all around and about is seeming trouble.

Oh Dear, do I ever have miles to go before I sleep…
 
I think it would be simply put if you:

Put yourself second and acted with charity to everyone you meet.

I don’t mean second with that “Look how good I am” idea, or as a martyr. Put yourself second as a servant of Jesus.

Act chriably. When your waitress gets your order wrong. Be nice. When your in a long checkout line, don’t take it personally or get mad. Offer it up. Offer up each little life challenge to God as a way to grow. Seek that growth. That’s the simplest I can offer.

Put yourself second and act with charity.
 
Make it a daily practice to read one chapter from The Imitation of Christ. by Thomas à Kempis. The chapters are quite short but every sentence brings home an important thought, especially thoughts that support humility.
 
I pray this Litany every now and then. Pay attention to the ones you stumble over - they tell you where you have the most work to be done!

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed,
Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being loved…
From the desire of being extolled …
From the desire of being honored …
From the desire of being praised …
From the desire of being preferred to others…
From the desire of being consulted …
From the desire of being approved …
From the fear of being humiliated …
From the fear of being despised…
From the fear of suffering rebukes …
From the fear of being calumniated …
From the fear of being forgotten …
From the fear of being ridiculed …
From the fear of being wronged …
From the fear of being suspected …

That others may be loved more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be esteemed more than I …
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease …
That others may be chosen and I set aside …
That others may be praised and I unnoticed …
That others may be preferred to me in everything…
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should…
