What does it take to break a life long sinful habit? Is it even possible? Is one’s soul damned to hell if he or she can’t overcome a sin?

Yes it is absolutely possible. Patience and practice are what is needed. Be well.

Truth to be told, if we die in State of Mortal Sin without repentance, we are going to hell. To enter heaven or the purgatory, we need to be in State of Grace, pure and clean.

That said, you CAN overcome ANY temptation you get, because God will NOT allow you to be tempted beyond what you can manage. It is an opportunity to grow in virtue.

Prayer and ‘fasting’ helps one overcome temptations by a practice in self control. You might start there. Sometimes medical or psychological intervention is needed as well.

I am only on my fourth week of trying to break a life long habit … so far I am using confession, the receiving of communion, prayer, and the reading of spiritual books … I pray every day for the conversion from the sin and have also used the intercession of Mary. The Divine Mercy prayers are most helpful to me, as I am reminded of our Lord’s constant mercy.

I pray for your own conversion from this sin. I hope that you understand that there are many of us that have the same issue … I believe sin is something that we all have to work on every day of our lives … and for some of us it is one constant sin that is a major issue … but we keep praying for the Mercy of our Lord and believe in that Mercy.

God Bless You

A sinful habit is considered a vice which is due to the repetition of the sin. Once deeply entrenched, it will take much force to exist the habit. With God all things are possible. This is not to say that God will make the habit disappear at once, although He can do this. You need to encounter Jesus, your Saviour, when you experience a change of heart and a new life of grace, you will receive the strength of will to counter the habit, or vice. It will be a continual fight, and as long as you fight, turning to the Lord, you will grow spiritually stronger, and if you keep it up, your vice will turn into a virtue, a good habit, and this will cause you to remain on the road to your salvation. Heaven is won by violence to ourselves when we fight the deep inclinations to sin, we are in a battle with ourselves, and the devil who never gives us rest, OTOH, God never leaves us alone, and is there to give us strength to survive and conquer.

A lot of good advice here…
Besides frequent confession and prayer:
  1. Find a good and trusted spiritual advisor
  2. Forgive yourself! A sin that has become a habit over a long time doesn’t usually just simply go away. As it took time to develop the habit it will take time to break the habit. The longer this habit has been in place the longer it will take to break the habit - this is a well studied fact.
  3. Depending on what the habit is, you may also need some medical and social support.

Avoid the occasion of sin. Whatever tempts you.
Prayer, fasting, penance, frequent Confession, frequent devout receiving of Holy Communion. Spiritual reading. Meditation on the Passion of Jesus, gazing at a crucifix, holy water. Advice from a holy priest.

Ask yourself what Jesus did when the Devil tried to tempt him, he prayed and fasted.

Fasting is a discipline that trains us to reject great sins, by “practising” on food, internet, sweets and ect.

I’d suggest following the black fast if you are able, a great time to start would either be the Wedensday and Friday fast, or when advent starts after st. Martins day.

Amen. I would recommend **frequent **confession and prayer as the primary instruments in overcoming habitual sin.

Yes, it is possible to break a life-long sinful habit. With God, nothing is impossible. Ask, seek, knock and keep doing so, and go to the sacraments as frequently as you can. He loves us infinitely and wants us to work out our salvation with Him.

Our Blessed Mother helps much! Keep asking for her intercession.

I agree 100% with this. Fasting is far and away the surest and best way to break any habit, in my experience. And by fasting I mean extended fasting. “Extended” as in frighteningly long periods of time… But fasting gives us amazing strength and changes us in ways we couldn’t have imagined or predicted beforehand. It will sound strange and incomprehensible to those without the experience, but fasting teaches us what our true will is. We become far, far better people.

This is really skirting the “no medical advice” rule, and so if you (MainBrain) or anyone else is curious about this, please private message me.

Extended fasting isn’t something that’s necessarily safe and healthy for everyone.

Also, fasting is something which the Gospels specifically advise us to keep secret, lest we become boastful and prideful. The beauty of CAF, though, is that we’re semi-anonymous, and therefore we’re able to discuss this if we’re careful about it. And it’s a vitally important topic.

All things are possible through Christ who strengths me. At the point of death, it is difficult for me to believe anyone is sinless. Then again, I do not know. Perhaps, I am cynical.

With prayer and faith you can do it. I have a similar experience. I stopped a habitual sin a few months ago and have not relapsed and have had very little temptation to do so. Prayers to Our Lady and faith in our Lord are more powerful than sin.

I’m going through the same situation … 4 weeks … the rosary is powerful.

Read and apply. The teaching in Franklin hall, book the atomic power if fasting, it is a free pdf, it has a 50 year success rate

To change one’s life and habits one has obtained, we must become aware of them, which you have done. Then become aware why you want to break it and not for what others say, but why will it make you better. When the urge comes divert the mind to higher things as others already suggested and if you give in observe your energy, mental state and consciousness before, during and after the event and most important drop the guilt you are in earth school to learn, grow and better yourself so learn and change.
