What does it take to break a life long sinful habit? Is it even possible? Is one’s soul damned to hell if he or she can’t overcome a sin?
Truth to be told, if we die in State of Mortal Sin without repentance, we are going to hell. To enter heaven or the purgatory, we need to be in State of Grace, pure and clean. Is it even possible? Is one’s soul damned to hell if he or she can’t overcome a sin?

Prayer and ‘fasting’ helps one overcome temptations by a practice in self control. You might start there. Sometimes medical or psychological intervention is needed as well. What does it take to break a life long sinful habit? Is it even possible? I am only on my fourth week of trying to break a life long habit … so far I am using confession, the receiving of communion, prayer, and the reading of spiritual books … I pray every day for the conversion from the sin and have also used the intercession of Mary. The Divine Mercy prayers are most helpful to me, as I am reminded of our Lord’s constant mercy. What does it take to break a life long sinful habit? Is it even possible? A sinful habit is considered a vice which is due to the repetition of the sin. Once deeply entrenched, it will take much force to exist the habit. With God all things are possible. This is not to say that God will make the habit disappear at once, although He can do this. You need to encounter Jesus, your Saviour, when you experience a change of heart and a new life of grace, you will receive the strength of will to counter the habit, or vice. It will be a continual fight, and as long as you fight, turning to the Lord, you will grow spiritually stronger, and if you keep it up, your vice will turn into a virtue, a good habit, and this will cause you to remain on the road to your salvation. Heaven is won by violence to ourselves when we fight the deep inclinations to sin, we are in a battle with ourselves, and the devil who never gives us rest, OTOH, God never leaves us alone, and is there to give us strength to survive and conquer. What does it take to break a life long sinful habit? Amen. I would recommend **frequent **confession and prayer as the primary instruments in overcoming habitual sin.A lot of good advice here…
Besides frequent confession and prayer:
- Find a good and trusted spiritual advisor
- Forgive yourself! A sin that has become a habit over a long time doesn’t usually just simply go away. As it took time to develop the habit it will take time to break the habit. The longer this habit has been in place the longer it will take to break the habit - this is a well studied fact.
- Depending on what the habit is, you may also need some medical and social support.
Yes, it is possible to break a life-long sinful habit. With God, nothing is impossible. Ask, seek, knock and keep doing so, and go to the sacraments as frequently as you can. He loves us infinitely and wants us to work out our salvation with Him.What does it take to break a life long sinful habit? Is it even possible? I agree 100% with this. Fasting is far and away the surest and best way to break any habit, in my experience. And by fasting I mean extended fasting. “Extended” as in frighteningly long periods of time… But fasting gives us amazing strength and changes us in ways we couldn’t have imagined or predicted beforehand. It will sound strange and incomprehensible to those without the experience, but fasting teaches us what our true will is. We become far, far better people.Prayer and ‘fasting’ helps one overcome temptations by a practice in self control. You might start there. All things are possible through Christ who strengths me. At the point of death, it is difficult for me to believe anyone is sinless. Then again, I do not know. Perhaps, I am cynical. What does it take to break a life long sinful habit? Is it even possible? Is one’s soul damned to hell if he or she can’t overcome a sin?
I’m going through the same situation … 4 weeks … the rosary is powerful. With prayer and faith you can do it. I have a similar experience. I stopped a habitual sin a few months ago and have not relapsed and have had very little temptation to do so. Prayers to Our Lady and faith in our Lord are more powerful than sin.
