How to Burn Palm Leaves?

I still had last years palms so I decided to burn them today to dispose of them. We don’t have a leaf burner or anything so I just dug a hole and tried to burn them to no avail. I even poured some lighter fluid on them and nothing happened. I was using matches.

Please help! I have no idea what to do now. The leaves are semi burned but the whole leaves are pretty much intact. I don’t want a whole ordeal. I wish I could just crush them or throw them in the garbage.

Not sure why you would even attempt this without the proper tools.
Fire is not somethng to play with.
Take the palms to your priest, he will dispose of them properly.

Next year put them in the easter vigil fire…check with your priest.

In some places, the church collects them before Ash Wednesday and uses them to make the sacramental ashes.

Exactly how many to you have? You may already have reduced them enough for burial.

I think that cutting them up and putting them in a metal can is a good idea.

I would do like Crusaderbear said, and check with your priest and see about saving them for next year.

You can save them for your priest to be burned for next year’s ashes, if he’ll need them and you want to do that.

I give mine back to the Church for burning before Ash Wednesday, as to be used for distribution.

If you have a garden, you could just bury the palm leaves. Chop them up and mix them into the soil. Eventually, in a year or maybe longer, depending on the soil and climate, they will decompose and enrich the soil just like any other plant material.

I don’t think all parishes do this. Ours doesn’t - we just buy new sifted ones from an ecclesiastical supplier, so they are fine. like dust.

I’d imagine that’s quite difficult to produce as an amateur without a furnace, for instance. Not to mention time-consuming and possibly against smoke-pollution laws.

I agree with the pp - bury them when they are chopped up.

I was taught to burn palm leaves during storms with a prayer for safety. I’ve never had much luck getting more than a half inch or so to burn at a time.

Thanks for the replies! I threw them in a garbage bag yesterday with the intention of bringing them to the office. This morning I threw the bag in my car and I was going to bring them to Father but I forgot and left the bag in my car. Oh well. Guess I’ll drop them off at the Office tomorrow, or soon.

Don’t forget to check with him whether this is the right thing for you to do. so that you will know next year.
