I have a bunch of rosaries, and they all came in clunky plastic boxes, which are a pain to carry in your pocket and are always breaking. And I don’t like to carry the rosary loose, where it gets tangled in my pocket knife and other impedementia.

Some visitor to our church lost a leather, 10-sided collapsable coin purse, and I saw it and dimly remembered my grandfather having such a purse for his rosary. After some searching, I found a source on the internet georgesshoes.com. This is a small company, run by a Catholic family, and they sell their “Round Squeeze Coin Purse” (product ID 22755) for $6.95 plus shipping.

Vern, I just love that 10-sided coin purse to carry a rosary. Very unusual. I may have to get one for me and some for gifts. Thanks for posting the link.

I got them for my wife, daughters and granddaughters. They’re flat, carry well and have no hardware to wear out your pocket.

Whatever you do, just don’t carry it around your neck!

I have had many little leather cases, but all of them eventually split at the seams. I found a tiny canvas bag about 1"x2" with a zipper. I’ve been carrying my rosary in that now for about 10 years and it is worn but intact.

Am I missing something?? I thought Simon DeMontfort advocated wearing the Rosary around your neck as a sign of piety. AFAIK there’s nothing wrong with wearing a Rosary around your neck…unless you are using it as a piece jewelry.

This is popular among Hispanics but seems to most common among the less Catechized ones and is often confused with Santeria practices which require the wearing of differently colored beads as a spiritual link to one’s Orisha (deity). A better historian than I might find that the early Spanish missionaries probably advocated the wearing of a rosary because the native peoples had neither pockets nor ten-sided change purses. This is extremely anecdotal but I seem to notice more Hispanics from the islands or from Central America wearing rosaries than those from South America itself. Two wild conjectures are that Santeria is more common in the Caribbean and the native peoples would be wearing less clothing than, say, those from the rather cold Andean regions.

Or more likely, it could come from de Montfort. These devotional practices got spread to Latin America and South America, too.

I originally thought that it was disrespectful to carry it around one’s neck but then I read on this forum that during one of Mary’s apparitions, she recommended that the rosary be prayed often and even worn around the neck.

While I do not do that (wear a crucifix and the brown scapular already), I believe based on what I read on this forum that there is nothing wrong with it.

I dedicate my left pocket to it, I can put my knife and other junk in my right pocket. Sometimes I’ll just tuck it in my belt or waistband. And if I’m wearing my scrubs I’ll toss it around my neck.

And about the neck thing, since it comes up alot
Blessed Alan relates that a man he knew had tried desperately all kinds of devotions to rid himself of the evil spirit which possessed him, but without success. Finally, he thought of wearing his rosary round his neck, which eased him considerably. He discovered that whenever he took it off the devil tormented him cruelly, so he resolved to wear it night and day. This drove the evil spirit away forever because he could not bear such a terrible chain. Blessed Alan also testifies that he delivered a great number of those who were possessed by putting a rosary about their necks.

This 10-sided purse has no zippers or clasps. It’s a simple leather cup with the sides folded to form a collapsed rosette. Squeeze it and it gapes open. Release pressure and it closes.

In Viet Nam I took over a rifle company that was in bad shape. I went to work, getting the troops in the proper uniform, with all their weapons and equipment cleaned up and so on. And I made them get rid of all their &^%$@ love beads. And then the Catholic chaplain comes out to say mass for us – and gives the troops rosaries and tells them to wear them around their necks!!

I could have strangled him!

lol, Vern, you’re a fella I’d like to kill an afternoon with.
I bet you got some doozies to tell 😃

I have always found it best to carry it in my pocket…
But then it gets all tangled up in my pocket knife, lighter (always carry a source of fire) and other impedementia. And usually I drop a couple of .22 shells when pulling it out.😃
