How to confess sins you are ashamed of?

Remember: priests don’t judge. Or at least they’re not meant to. They’re meant to guide us, to give us some advice. If they judge on people, they would be committing a sin.

You have received such wonderful answers here.
Please know that you are not alone. I, too, am a tremendous sinner and have had terrible times right before confessing. I lived to tell the tale, as I’m sure you will as well!

A couple of things not mentioned yet are to ask Our Blessed Mother for guidance and prayers, as she always leads us to her Divine Son.

Another is to ask your guardian angel for assistance as well. As much as the evil one detests us confessing our sins, how much more does our guardian angel rejoice when we do!

May God be with you now and always!

Euwe, I know just how you are feeling. I felt that way for 20 years, not willing to give it all up because I was to ashamed to admit things to anyone. Last week I was at a Catholic men’s conference and being moved to go to confession by the speakers, Finally I decided it had to be done and I sat face to face with a priest at the conference and bared it all, he was so compassionate and understanding and his word were so comforting and he made me feel so loved by God and him. I have not felt this free in a lot of years but that day I lost my fear of confession and now look forward to it. Just pray about it and trust and God will heal your wounds and remove you fears.
God Bless

Well, I have to confess that I chickened out.

There was a time when I lived way out in the periphery of the Church, I am talking the boon-docks. And, as I approached the heart of the Church I realized I had some serious sins to confess. So I went and confessed at a parish I knew I was not going to be frequenting often. It may not be the best advice but it worked for me. I confessed everything and walked out squeaky clean.

I went to confession after many years away from the Church and had no worries about just sitting with the priest in his house -I made a phone call as my family object to me resuming mass attendance and I have to do it in secret . I just told him I had sinned through being absent and he absolved me and told me in the circumstances I would be excused from attending mass . I go whenever I can usually during the week at lunchtime . Please prat that one day I can go freely .

Praying for you! I’m sort if in the same boat, so please pray for me, too.

I write them down in case I get nervous
This is great advise that I dont normally see being done. I highly recommend this one. Since we are human, its all too easy to “forget” and not confess the mortal sins, and then when we get absolution for the ones we did confess, we just wash our hands of it knowing that we missed one or two really embarrassing ones. When doing your examination of concience jot them down in actual sin AND NUMBER. That last one is very important.

Oh yeah, one more thing… Unless you are writing in code, remember to tear up and toss the notes after confession!
