Hi!
Wanted to start a thread that may help those struggling to confess impurity this Easter and for the Divine Mercy Novena;

I want to hypothetically ask a question on IF a person needed to confess;

Let’s hypothetically say, someone was bound to various mortal sins of impurity for more than a decade.

How does someone confess mortal sins against this commandment if they all vary in terms of gravity, type, scandal, seriousness, circumstances, context, and consequences

What is an example of too vague, or spot on without being too explicit.

(Sins of impurity can also vary, due to exposure to the media, Universities and colleges can be soul destroying, bad friends, scandal, others being led to sin, thoughts with consent, etc, its probably the most embarressing and difficult commandment to confess hypothetically, and can be a source of temptation or scandal to the Confessor possibly as he listens.)

I’m just giving a list here to show that this commandment varies greatly in terms of context and gravity:
The types of this sin vary; adultery, fornication, masturbation, pornography, sodomy, bestiality, nudity, immodest fashion, whether others knew/ were present / were encouraged or enticed to sin, If someone was being severly onslought by the devil they could be suffering from impure temptations against anything or anyone,

Even a person growing up as a child could have lived through something involving something that is minorly immodest but still needs to be confessed,

So my hypothetical question would be; what advice does the church have for people confessing this commandment;

you are over thinking this…
  • In its simplest form to confess a mortal sin… Type and Number since your last confession.
  • If needed you could provide context (IE - a convert from a faith that did not consider masturbation a sin) for mitigating circumstance.
  • So, in a nutshell, keep it simple. If the confessor needs more context he will ask.
    🙂

Speak freely.
Simply say "I’ve always had trouble with impurity in various forms. I desire to be turn away from impurity once and for all.

Period. The priests have heard this literally thousands of times. It’s nothing new to them. They get it. They understand, and if you make a good confession, you will be absolved.

In short: just do it.

The priest I had for my first confession was amazing. He broke down each commandment and we went through them. When we got to the 6th he gave examples and I told him I never knew masturbation was sinful. He said, “don’t worry, you’re fine. Just don’t do it anymore.”

Just confess number and kind and if you have stumbled upon something you weren’t aware of, just say so.

You are really over thinking.

In terms of context;
Others being involved, mean they are tempted to sin, so it is.graver?
If.they sin or not, its put.their souls at risk.

Other scenario;
Awful explicit.info:
Lets say a lad at a nightclub dancing, lets someone of the opposite gender open his shirt completely (but.he.has a tshirt.under.it), then deliberately he.has.no tshirt next time this happens -and if his.intent was to entice.that person to sin, and this happened in public, (all more circumstances making the sin more grave)

Or another situation
Its almost easier to confess “masturbation” Heading, than to be explicit and for the tempting someone to take items of clothing off themselves or himself (nudity/ partial nudity)

Or
Lets say a person during childhood; Loads of mixed gendered children at a sleepover, and tempting others to take items of clothing off themselves or them to take clothing off himself (nudity/ partial nudity), maybe some involved had interest in breaking that commandment and were enticing others

This seems much more explicit than saying “masturbation” or “fornication”

So …:confused:
Are you suggesting that people don’t confess properly?
Or are you saying that we should confess sins that others “might” have sinned because of certain actions?
How can you know that? How is that possible?
What exactly are you “hypothetically” advancing?

Let’s say hypothetically that a person did all of those things years ago while a child and in college and that it is now waning on said person’s mind. The best thing to do is to go to confession and confess everything that is on the person’s mind, even if it’s told in a story like fashion to the priest.

When I had my first confession in over 20+ years, my confession had lots of sexual sin to discuss. I didn’t talk about every single encounter, but I made sure the priest had a pretty good idea of the different sins.

He was a wonderful and understanding that I was confessing years worth of sin. And man did I ever cry. But it was really a freeing experience.

If you need to tell a priest your life’s story then do it. However, I would recommend that you either (a) do it via appointment or (b) when the line isn’t long (in other words, be one of the first confession)

All mortal sins need to be confessed in number and kind (and circumstance the changes the kind…ie it was a Church you burned down and thus sacrilege…the fact that one is married needs to be included say for sexual sins (one can add that in the beginning) …)

One can not just say for example " I sinned against 6th commandment"…(I am referring when one is confessing the sins in a normal confession - not say when they have already be confessed and absolved and one is simply adding such as an addition such as "and all the sins of life -especially against chastity)

Jimmy Akin Senior Apologist of Catholic Answers jimmyakin.com/2007/03/specific_confes.html

(the confessor can assist one…and also remember he has heard so much over time no need for anyone to fear)

(and if one forgets a mortal sin - one is to confess it in the next confession…again I am referring to “unconfessed” mortal sin that one was forgotten)

Do I have to confess scandal for each mortal sin,
Eg: were others present, were others encouraged by words or actions to sin, were younger people present when I yelled at dad, were people of the opposite gender there when I said an impure joke, were children in the room whdn I should have changed channels on tv because an explicit scene was on tv,

Do things like this need to be mentioned?

Go straight to the point. It is not like people will hear your confession anyway.

When you go to confession ask the priest how best to approach these problems. Each priest may have a different idea but you will at least have the done the best you can and when the Priest absolves you…you are forgiven.
