How to Confess

I have a burning question on my mind. My Rite of Welcoming was just today, and I’m on the road to becoming Catholic. That being said, I have not lived as a Catholic yet, and my first confession is coming up, and I’m a bit worried because there is a sin I’ve committed I’m almost certain the priest will not understand. Of course I will try to explain to the best of my ability, but it’s simply too strange to understand. What do I do about this during my first confession? Should I just tell him the type of sin it was? Would that be sufficient?
 
Get your body there and let the Priest and Holy Spirit do the rest.

Whatever it is, the Priest has heard it before.
 
Right! get yourself there and let the priest and the Holy Spirit do the rest. The priest is not the boogeyman. He is there in Christ’s place. And he has heard it ALL BEFORE.

Chances are that he knows its your first confession and he will help you through it. Just say what the sin was, You do not have to go into gory details unless he deems it a very serious offense. Such as “Father, I shot my brother”. Then he may or may not want more info.

Don’t worry if the priest will understand or not. Tell him everything and he’ll absolve you, end of story 🙂 priests have heard all kinds of Confessions… I was terrified for my first Confession too, and some of my sins were very hard to say, but I said them and then was VERY glad afterwards that I did!

Try to explain the sin to the best of your ability, if the priest would not understand, he’ll just ask some questions for more clarification… most priests are very understanding, there were times when I was sure my confession wasn’t making sense, but the priest was patient and it turned out alright.
