How to consider the views held in Martin Conway's writing "Catholic Politics in Europe, 1918-1945"?

It seems that some atheists I met on the Internet try using these views to attack the Roman Catholic Church.

For those of us not familiar with the book or the views, can you please provide a brief description of what Conway wrote that atheists are using?
