How to convince a liberal Protestant Christian that God should have authority over our sexuality?

Leviticus 20:9 (New International Version)

9 " 'If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother, and his blood will be on his own head.
 
That’s the Law of Moses binding to the ancient Jews, it does not bind us now that we are under the New Covenant.

People are constantly quoting the OT for morality here…every time birth control is brought up the story of Onan is soon to follow.

No, not the entire OT, just certain Laws of Moses. For instance, you no longer have to eat Kosher. You should look to the NT to see which ones are still kept. For instance, we know from how Jesus acted that the death penalty for certain sins is no longer mandatory, and we know that you no longer have to eat Kosher. The 10 commandments, for instance, are still kept. When in doubt, consult the catechism. 🙂
 
My only contention with this notion is when people want to translate God’s authority into laws - i.e. making sex outside of marriage a crime, making birth control illegal, etc. Heck, there was a poster on the forum a while back who wanted to make masturbation a crime! Talk about a busybody mentality run amok! Essentially what they are saying is “Someone is doing something that I think is wrong, and they should be punished for it!” When someone takes this approach, they have immediately identified themselves to me as someone not to be taken seriously. However, having said that - yes - it would be great if people reserved sex for marriage, etc. But it is best to lead by example, and to preach the good news. People always respond better to persuasion than coercion anyway.

Yes. If someone staunchly believes something, they probably won’t change their opinion on it anyway.
