How to correctly say St Augustine

My wife and I are curious as to the correct way to say St Augustine. Is it like Augustin, or more like the city in Florida Au-gus-teen? We are having a baby and if a boy I want Augustine to be the middle name. We have chosen Therese for a girl middle name. God Bless.

I believe the “correct” pronunciation is Au-GUS-tin.

(But that said, my first impulse is to say, AU-gus-teen, when speaking about the man.)

Maybe more like “uh-GUS-tin”

The Augustinians ran my high school and every one of them pronounced it au-GUS-tin.

I think the city in FL is pronounced that way because it was originally settled by the Spanish…

As far as I can tell, it is a Catholic/Protestant difference. When I was Protestant I only heard AU-gus-teen, but any time I’ve heard a Catholic say it, it is Au-GUS-tin.

Our parish is St Augustine’s-- ah-GUS-tin though some people throw Ah-gust-teens out there sometimes…it always makes me cringe.

Well, the man’s name was Aurelius Augustinus (“Au-RE-li-us Au-GUS-teen-us” in English pronunciation I would assume), but the more normal “Augustin” is, I believe, pronounced “Au-GUS-teen”

But I’m ESL so I might be very wrong

If you’re naming a child, YOU decide how you want his name pronounced. There is no “correct” way to pronounce a name. It’s unique to every person.

Our daughter’s name is Evangeline. (simliar to Augustine, right?)

How do you pronounce it? Many people say, “Ee-van-juh-lyne,” accent on the second syllable.

A few say, “Ee-van-juh-leena.” (Germans?)

WE say, “Ee-van-juh-lin,” accent on second syllable. And that’s how she says it, and that’s how people who are introduced to her pronounce it.

The other pronunciations are just fine, but we chose to say “Ee-van-juh-lin.”

We actually have more trouble with our second daughter, whose name is “Charity.” Nice and simple, right? WRONG! So many people call her “Chastity,” or “Chassidy”. How do they read those out of “Charity?!” Oh, well.
