If you hear malicious lies about others in your parish, how do you deal with that?

You cannot hold two thoughts at the same time. Butt in and change the subject to something more edifying without sounding like a pharisee!

This gives only a vague idea of the situation. So it is difficult to say much.
Personally, I would call the person out. That is, I would ask the person how they know it would be true.
Personally I find great abhorrance in such a thing and stay away from such a person afterwards, who is backbiting, but of course this is just because of my personality, since it may be better to try to deal with it instead in some such a way.
Even passing on truthful information that damages a person’s reputation is sinful, but lies that do this are a greater sin, and I would think it likely it would be a mortal sin.
Hopefully this is not a widespread and general situation, which would be harmful to everyone. I was in a parish where this happened to the parish priest for some reason that I don’t understand, and finally he was transferred by the bishop after some parishioners would not stop.

Well if it’s gossip (example: someone you know from a parish comes up to you and tells you “I heard that so-and-so was…[insert malicious rumor]”) I would cut them off ASAP and say, “I don’t that’s any of my business. For all we know that’s not the case.”

I ignore them and let the speaker know I choose not to listen to such remarks, and caution them strongly against repeating the remarks elsewhere, since now all will know the source of the malice.

Try to find positive things about that person. The greatest virture is that of charity. Since we all belong to the Mystical Body of Christ, when you hear stories and gossip about people, you are treating Christ the same way. If people had to pay each time they talked about or judged a person, do you know how rich they would be?

If you are in a situation, just change the subject, I know as humans, we all have a tendency to judge, but we have to work on it with the help of God’s graces.

God bless you.
