How to deal with JWs?

This, yet another publication by the Watchtower, i suspect will be out of production soon and many will be scampering to cover up the damage it will cause.

I’m sorry, but the dvd you mention sounds like a Protestant non-JW dvd. But You’re saying it was a JW dvd?

If you can show them that “God’s mouthpiece on earth” made an error, they could start to question the whole thing.

Except that they seem to be aware of the errors and now say it’s ok, “we have new light”.

Yes. It was showing how Henry Grew in the 1800’s, when he was a Baptist preacher, discovers through studying the scriptures that the Trinity is false and he becomes a JW from then on. This video was given to me by a JW explaning their views.

That is certainly true when speaking about doctrinal changes, like the blood transfusions flip- flopping.

However, I’m talking more about the blatantly cooked sources used in their publications. Doctrinal flip-flopping is one thing, knowingly cooking and lying about sources is another beast.

The Watchtower essentially has what I call a “hall of fame” of publications (some of which had to be retired from publishing) with nothing but cooked sources and taking sources completely out of context to make their point. Would God’s organization/mouthpiece on earth need to cook sources to make their point? It is not a bullet-proof way to get through to them, but works far better than arguing bible verses with them.

I always get approached by JWs and I don’t really know how to talk to deal with them. How do you engage in conversation with them? They only let you talk after reciting their scripted stuff they are supposed to say and don’t really keep an open mind on what you are saying. Should I offer them a Rosary? Should I do anything?

the BEST defense is a Good Offense

To be effective one MUST in an absolute sense know our Catholic Faith well enough to be able to explain it and even DEFEND it when called upon to do so; always with charity and clarity [FACTS]

This requires FIRST of all a good understanding of what the Catholic Bible actually says and teaches. KNOWING that JW’s DO NOT actually believe in or ACCEPT the Biblw which is WHY they have their own version called THE BOOK OF MORMONS

KNOW that while they dupliciously use the sames terms of God, Jesus,; they have a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT understanding of the terms and what they imply.

JW"S hold that Jesus was JUST a “good man” begotten by “god the father in sexual union” for example. They do NOT believe as we Do in what either heaven or Hell are and mean and have reinvented their own after-life experiences.

The Best 2 things that a “novice” Catholic [in process of still being FORMED and Educated in the Catholic Faith] can do, is in charity PROCLAIM that you are a Practicing Catholic and that you choose NOT to listen to what they have to say. Which them a good -day and good-by. [PERIOD] … It is not a good idea for one unable to factually defend our Catholic Beliefs to engage them, as they are WELL TRAINED, in GROUPS and can be very devious.

Secondly; put yourself on a committed TRACK to learn enough to be able to explain and defend our Faith and Moral beliefs.

PJM is right. Unless you are prepared to go toe to toe with them scripturally it will be difficult for you. Down in San Antonio, the Jehovah’s witness have a very good track record of winning Roman Catholics. The reason why is simple. The Catholics do not know how to defend themselves scripturally. The average JW elder will quote scripture without opening his New World Translation. This translation by the way was copy written in 1959 and has several corrupted verses including John 1:1 Be aware.

Do not engage until or unless you can out maneuver them. As I mentioned, In San Antonio they win Catholics like crazy. It is a shame.

You mention JW but you are actually talking about Mormonism. JWs believe that God the Father is Jehova, Jesus is His son, the firstborn of all creation who existed before his conception as Michael the Archangel. He created everything, but he was created by Jehova. He is not God. But they flip-flop on this issue when faced with difficult verses and call him a god, though at the same time say there’s only ONE God. They may even call Jesus “mighty god” but not Almighty God. The Holy Spirit is just a ‘force’.

They believe in the devil and demonic influence, but not hell. They believe when they die, they just don’t exist any more. They wait for the resurrection so they can live forever on a Paradise new earth. Only good, faithful JWs get this ‘reward’, if not good enough, their soul is simply annihilated. No suffering. Only 144,000 can be rewarded heaven, so most don’t expect it.

They can’t get involved in goverment activities, saying the pledge is idol worship, the say they are the good fruit because they are the only ones who don’t go to war. They say this is proof that they are God’s true organization, they can’t get involved in social issues…not allowed to influence people’s choices.

My friend is banished and goes to church every week and nobody is allowed to talk to him. He’s been trying to get on good terms for years. He’s banished because of sin. He’s written repentace letters, had several surprise visits by the commitee, they actually investigate you to see if you’re good enough. I had pro-life stuff at his house and he had to hide them.

Their ‘priests’ are elders, they don’t like the word church. They completely separate themselves from Christianity, but want to be called Christians.Their bible is the most corrupt thing you’d ever see. They use 2 different words for the same greek word for worship. Worship for Jehova, obescience…or whatever the spelling…for Jesus. They do the same exact thing for the word Lord in the New Testament. Lord for Jesus, Jehova if it refers to the Father…even though it’s the same greek word.

Videos on youtube show their worship service… that they call “meeting”…is very informal. It’s like a class. Just reading questions from their magazine and answering with the prewritten answers. They are not allowed to think. Apparently the elder will only call on people they know. Then they do some prayers only to Jehova. No prayers to Jesus.

Those that have been in the JW organization for a long time, like elders, are extremely steadfast in their beliefs and it is next to impossible to get them to change their views on anything, no matter what you show them from the Bible, because their Bible (New World Translation) translates the Scriptures (the original languages) in a different way that seems to back up their teachings better than the Bible you and I normally have.

Yes you are correct, I did consider that when I wrote it. When we are speaking with non-Catholics, we sometimes forget that there are strong believers out there in many faiths who seem closed minded to us, and not very willing to compromise their beliefs, regardless of how we may view them. I do understand your point.

“Sorry, not interested, have a nice day, bye!” was my usual way of talking to them.

I do that as well. I’ve come to realize that when they come to someone’s house, they are in “sales mode” like a car dealer focused on convincing you to buy what they are selling. They are not open-minded inquirers wanting to learn more about your faith or have an honest give-and-take.

Unless you are led of the Holy Spirit to speak to one, I would recommend not engaging them when they are in “sales mode”.

This is so true. I once was given a dvd to watch by a JW entitled “Faith in Action part 1”. Well into the video the narrator introduces a man by the name of Henry Grew which seemed to come into play sometime between the time of Joseph Priestly and Charles Russell. The narrator introduces Grew as a Baptist preacher, tells how Grew came up with the revolutionary concept to let scripture interpret scripture and then he, Grew, came to the conclusion that the trinity doctrine was false and began to preach/teach accordingly. The video depicts Grew sitting by himself with a pile of books and having a grand revelation. This conclusion was considered heresy in the Baptist religion and he had to leave the Baptist church and began to teach the Trinity as false doctrine.

So far i have questioned 3 JWs directly about this. The one who gave me the dvd has no answer the other two have not seen the dvd. That was about 2 years ago, I assume they still have not seen the dvd or have no answer.

JWs do worship he same God as Christians do as there is only on God. Their understanding of God is quite different and do not know Him as Jesus as we do.
