You can do all you can possibly do, and you will still not empty your heart of disordered self-love: it is rooted too deeply, to pervasively, within. Nevertheless: You should - you must - do all you can possibly do! When you demonstrate such serious sincerity before God to do this - to truly hate and long to reject every lingering trace of inordinate self-love within you - then perhaps God will do for you and to you what you cannot do without Him.
What God can do, when it is in His time to do so, is to send into the soul the “Dark Night of the Senses”. This is the first and necessary purgation - cleansing - of the soul, of disordered self-love: the root cause of all our troubles.
