How to deal with sexual humour culture at work?

In my experience, there gets to be a point where you put on the Mom Look. As in, “Cut it out. Look at me; I’m not a 16 year old you can embarrass. This is work, not a locker room. Just cut it out.” Go ahead and put on the “really? I suppose you’re *proud *of that?” face, as if you you were dealing with adolescent boys who ought to know better.

You want to lean a bit more on the “I am disappointed in you” or “you are being boring, predictable and socially inept” or “you are embarrassing yourself” than “I am offended.” The disappointment ought to be over their poor choice of when to indulge in unprofessional humor. Avoid the plain fact that there really isn’t an appropriate time for this. Stick with the “if you want to indulge in puerile humor on your own time, that’s your business, but during business hours try to act as if you’re in a professional setting.”

Do not try to teach a pig to sing. You just frustrate yourself and annoy the pig. Swine will act like swine. The best you can do is to teach the creatures to stay off your lap. If you have to use a hog prod, so be it, but do not let on that they are getting to you. They talk like this to gain attention. You are better off if you act as if they have lost the capacity to shock you, that by now you just find them tiresome, professionally pitiful and, as “humorists,” entirely predictable and boring.

I would not be above:** “Don’t you people have friends or, you know, dates you go on for this kind of thing? Or does your habit of chasing young women with pictures of your naked bum make it a little hard for you to get a date? I can’t imagine there is anyone who finds any of this charming, let’s just say that. At any rate, I don’t, and we’re at work. Cut it out. Save it for somebody who finds it amusing.”**

If you complain to higher-ups, you should also complain about it as unprofessional, a big distraction to your ability to get work done, and not a good reflection on the company. If they are harassing you–and literally chasing you with pictures you don’t want to see is harassing–say that you have tried to get them to cut it out and you are at your wit’s end how to get through their thick heads that you don’t want a bit of it. You don’t want to whine or appear as if you cannot handle your own problems, but since you weren’t issued a cattle prod you’d like some assistance in communicating that this isn’t acceptable.

And yes, I’d say, “No, I’m* not *repressed. I’m merely a professional and, if I may be so blunt, a grown-up. This is ridiculous. We live in 2016. Normal people do not expect to do this at work. They expect to have some little shred of self-control more than a troupe of unsupervised middle-schoolers when the teacher has left the room. I want them to grow up and cut it out and that is not too much to ask or more than they can manage with their little bitty boy brains.”

If not, well, you need to find a job where there are some professionals at work. Women had to put up with this in 1960 in predominately male workplaces, but most places expect something more than that now.
This is great advice, and I especially like the quote I bolded, and also the point of explaning to “higher ups” (presumably the people who you made the work agreement with in the first place?) that the issue is about their poor behavior, and not so much about how you feel. While “I feel” statements are very helpful in conversations with people who love you, they don’t seem to work with sexist jerks who think it is ok to harrass you, and they probably won’t be that meaningful to those guys’ supervisors/directors. So while your discomfort is valid, you will be far more effective directing your comments so that the people you are speaking to see how the behavior affects THEM. The guys harassing you don’t care how you feel, but they might be embarrassed to realize they look like idiots/immature bratty children. And their supervisors may or may not care how you feel, but they will definitely care how the behavior of their employers affects their company and THEIR jobs. Not to mention, they should be worried about you leaving because of horrible working conditions.

I’m sorry people are treating you that way, having genitals shoved in your face, even in picture form, is pretty threatening, not to mention all the other stuff.

As I said, there is some value in alerting rational women concerning the ways that a small number of men with twisted minds think. Judges and juries do not buy these weightless excuses these days, but that doesn’t stop sociopaths from trying to use them–and it really does take someone divorced from his conscience to place blame in the way we are discussing.
No but being a rich white male is considered grounds of absurd amount of leniency, see a DuPont heir getting 0 prison time from raping his daughter or Brock Turner getting 6 months and will serve three months from raping a girl even though he was literally caught in the act doing it.

I’m sorry, I’m not sure if I’ve posted this in the right section but wasn’t sure where else to put it!

I’m currently working with a large group of men (20+) from teenagers to 40+. I’m a 32 year old woman.

I find that there is somewhat of a culture of constantly making sexual comments as jokes and I feel quite uncomfortable with it. A lot of my job with these men is managing/overseeing a project and involves a lot of direct communication. I’m finding comments aren’t just made around me but at me I.e “There she is on her knees again, she spends a lot of her time on her knees I bet” or at lunch, they were making sexual comments about how I was eating a banana. I know, really immature. But it’s constant and, if I’m honest I feel a little bit like I want to cry tonight, Pathetic right?

I’m by no means a prude but I do feel quite disrespected. When I was younger I probably would have laughed it off or pretended it didn’t bother me but I’m sick of pretending now.

A couple of times today I made comments like, “Excuse me, I’m a lady, I’d rather you didn’t speak like that about me.” and (genuinely) “I’m sorry but I didn’t understand that joke/don’t know what you mean.” When a sexual innuendo was made that I didn’t get. However, they just kept saying “Lady, yeah right? You love it really. You’re as dirty as the next person etc.”

At one point during lunch, they started taking out pictures of their genitals that they had taken on their phones and started passing it about and then trying to show them to me.

It may sound silly but I was really offended. I’d just been to mass. I’ve been fighting so hard to commit to purity of mind, heart and body and it’s a constant struggle. I am a virgin, have never seen a naked man in real life and have never seen porn. I know - I might as well be a unicorn right? But honestly…I kind of want to protect whatever ever purity I have and have a kind of innocence I guess.

I ended up saying, “Excuse me but I really don’t want to see those images. I’m going to have to leave.” I left the room and they actually followed me to carry all of this on.

I really don’t know how to handle this. If I take it to senior management they make out that I am a prude/repressed and need to get over it. I work in a field that is full of very liberal minded people which in some ways is great but in others not so,

Do any of you have any advice please? Is there anyway I can communicate better to prevent this or is it just the way of the world now?
A bit of guessing if you don’t mind. If these people do and say the things you’ve mentioned, I would say they have no respect for you or others, or at least, ladies. The ‘boys will be boys’ argument means they have no respect for themselves either. Since the West is so immersed in showing such things as funny on TV and in movies, much less the internet, then they have fallen into a habit that is difficult to break. For example, it’s easier to be like those around you since any complaining would be viewed as an affront or challenge. “So, you think you’re better than we are?” “My dear chap, if you’re going to work here, I strongly suggest you don’t rock the boat.”

Most companies have some type of employee manual or code of conduct involving employees. Perhaps you should look into that. Perhaps they’re well behaved when strangers stop in and limit their "other side’ to when outsiders aren’t around. This is obviously demeaning to you and distracting, and you appear to have reached a limit. This is not a good work environment to stay in, especially if those in management brush off your complaints. But I encourage you to get some relief. Speak up, politely stating your case to those in charge.

All the best,

Ed

One has to wonder if the judge who concluded that “I think he will not be a danger to others” hadn’t had his own version of what Turner’s father callously characterized as “twenty minutes of action.” I cannot imagine he has a daughter, I’ll just say that. Outrageous.

But back to the thread: we don’t know the race of the males, nor their socioeconomic class. We only know it is a lot of one gender getting bold with their lewd talk because there is only one member of the opposite sex around. I think it is most likely that they are showing off to each other how uncomfortable they can make her; that is, that they aren’t this lewd when there isn’t someone there they can torment with embarrassment. Even women have been known to do this, when there is a mob of them and one of them notices that the lone male present is uncomfortable with their lewd talk. It stems from a cruel and insensitive sense of humor. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I hope the OP stays strong and makes it very clear to these yahoos that they are the ones who have reason to be embarrassed, not her.

Can you say, “Hostile work environment?” This is the kind of stuff lawsuits are made of so if your HR department knows about your situation and does their job, they should put a stop to this quickly. You’re probably not the only victim of these vulgarians so maybe others will come forward if the problem is addressed by HR. Highest praises for trying to remain virtuous in this culture.

These are not employees but people who are in some kind of need of rehabilitation from a criminal perspective from what it sounds like.

Frankly, I would do whatever I had to do to avoid being around them, even if it meant quitting the project. There’s a large group of these males and just you, one lone woman? I would be concerned about this leading to an attack.

Preposterous? I don’t think so.

I agree with those who say that someone is leading this project and should know about it… However, I’m guessing that political correctness may be causing an issue here with some fear of being accused of being racist or something.

Think about more than your career. Think about your physical safety

It’s a very long time since I have worked outside the home, but I do really sympathise.

Frankly I am quite surprised that culture still exists. What you are experiencing goes beyond friendly banter and well into sexual harassment which is illegal in the UK.

I would report it to your line manager and consider taking legal advice. I would imagine your employer will come down on this like a ton of bricks.

Sorry I haven’t replied sooner.

I’m meeting socially with the Director of the charity and I will mention how I have been treated to her tonight. I have to re-iterate again that I am self-employed and do not have a manager, these men are people who benefit from a charity, not employees and while there are employment laws against sexual harassment, they are not applicable in this instance.

To those who say I do my profession an injustice by saying its part and parcel of working in the arts, I’m afraid that I’m not. In Theatre when actors are rehearsing love scenes or getting changed with their dressers and measured for costumes etc, these comments will be made usually as “ice-breakers” or to cope with the awkwardness of the situation. In art, people will frequently make comments during Life Drawing classes that you wouldn’t make at work. These are just two very basic examples but, having worked in this field my whole life, please trust me when I say, sexual comments, references and actions are made every single day.

I’ve found some of the communication suggestions to be really helpful, thank you.

These men are not all criminals, though 2 or 3 have ran into a little trouble in the past and some were formerly homeless. I really don’t like people being described as “dregs”. I try to think “there but for the grace of God go I” and, let’s put it this way…who did Christ hang out with? People who were considered to be the lowest of the low, who no one else in society wanted to go near.

This project only lasts another 3 weeks. As I say, I will talk to the director of the charity tonight and ask for her help and I will also use some of the communication examples given here as well as giving the ring leader a very wide berth.

God Bless you all for your concern.

Okay we won’t call them dregs. However their actions do not speak well of them. It is what I call trashy behavior.

I also know Christ will not approve of their behavior either. He may hang out with them but He will demand that they behave themselves.

Very true!
