How to DETACH from the world?

Here are some ideas (in no particular order)

-Pray the Rosary.
-Beg the Blessed Mother to intercede for you.
-Fasting. Allow yourself to feel hunger pains.
-Abstinence. This is vague – maybe abstain from specific things.
-Read (Scripture, the Imitation of Christ, lives of the saints, etc).
-Adoration.
-Allow discomfort. Being too comfortable can be a spiritual liability.
-Spiritual directors. Ask them specifically for their assistance.
-Regular confession. At least once a month.

Thank you, very kind. What I haven’t tried on your list is:
-Blessed Mother (duh, for me)
-Adoration
You see, accident 22yrs.ago, daily severe migraines, so don’t leave house much. Father comes with Sacraments when pain is less. Daily offered up sufferings.✝️

Ugh, migraines are terrible. I have epilepsy and suffer from them periodically and they’re no joke. I’ll keep you in mind in prayer today.

Certainly do what you are capable of. I understand you’re mostly at home. While I’m sorry you suffer from these migraines, don’t be afraid to ask God to use those migraines to sanctify you.

Prayer for me is hard, I’m not eloquent at all and I often get distracted, but perhaps say “God, please use my migraines for the sake of my soul.” and pray it repeatedly. Suffering, while I don’t want to make light of it, can also be an opportunity.

Detaching from the world doesn’t mean detaching yourself from other people, this is a grave error many Christians make.

Detaching from the world is actually detaching from the things your ego seeks from the world.

Being popular, being wealthy, being the center of attention, etc.

So, if you seek to detach from the world, detach from the appetites the ego draws you to.

Thank you so much for your wise counsel. I try to listen to this short podcast every day. It’s a Litany of Humility by Merry Cardinal del Val, advisor to a Pope, & being studied as a possible candidate to begin his canonization process. It sounds to me that’s what you’re saying. Please listen. JMJ

Don’t imitate the sinful actions of those around you. I was speaking to a friend about her job. She mentioned there was so much gossip. I asked her how she dealt with it. She said, “I don’t participate.” For me, I don’t go to bars, strip clubs and do other things that are wrong.

Thank for starting this thread, there are many good insights here.

What do you all think about having the mental attitude of no or extremely diminished expectations leading to happiness because then you can’t be disappointed?
I’m talking on a strictly secular plane, we can still believe in God’s promises (i.e. Heaven)

As much as I want to say “love” first: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

At least that’s what my path was.

Do the will of God, in our state of life, God has called us

If longer devotions are difficult for you, I would highly recommend reading SacredSPace.ie daily.
It’s a very brief (offered in many languages) daily meditation, reflection, and a brief bit of the daily Mass scripture. It’s meditation and peace filling, Be sure to click on all the “helps” are you learn to navigate the daily reflectoins.
Peace.

Once a man came to St Philip Neri and asked him if he thought wearing a hair shirt was a good penance. St Philip replied that it would be a good penance if he wore the hair shirt outside his nice clothes.

Love St Philip Neri. If your comment has anything to do with my particular situation, it went over my head.

Between your bouts of panic attacks
Brought on by cosmic parallax
Say your prayers and be at peace
Until your peace begins to cease
Then grit your teeth and clinch your fists
Prepare yourself for more of this
Reach to the bottom of all things Autumn
Pull up dead leaves which smell like laudanum
And take a breath and let it in
Breathing in this sweet and numbing hint
Of nature’s promise of new life
Hard to imagine in such strife
As winter follows sure to kill
As buds give in to frost’s dread chill
Embrace that cold with all your being
Feel it’s embrace and find it freeing
Until at last you finally know
The only peace is letting go

'Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. ’ 1 John 2:15-17

Seems like you would be pretty detached from worldly pursuits, in that case! I find listening to Catholic radio is very helpful. It is pretty much the only radio I listen to anymore. I also like audio bible. I enjoy being read to, even when I don’t have a headache so I put on some inspiring Catholic reading and just lie back and shut my eyes.

I think this is good. Every day before work I remind myself that God is my employer, and that I am in the workplace to be light and salt to the world. I ask God to make His light shine through me, and to make me excel in my work so that His excellence can be reflected in me. It gets me out of a competetive mindset, and helps get me through tedious/boring tasks at time when I want to be lazy.

I can’t remember where I heard it, but one priest giving a talk said we don’t need a hair shirt anymore because we live and work with our hair shirts!

Reading the lives of the saints can inspire us to detachment.
