How to discern deceptive apparitions?

Someone else already felt the need to point this out and I already knew this so you all don’t need to pile on, thank you.

Sorry!

This is my story:

In 2007, my non-Christian co-worker prevailed upon our book buyer to get 2 New Age books by Edgar Cayce (who sold himself to the devil at age 13!). I bought them so no one else would get them and took them home

The Friday before Palm Sunday, I was sitting in the recliner while my parents were in the kitchen. No tv, just peace and quiet.

All of a sudden, I heard a voice - not audibly but I still heard it - say: BURN THOSE BOOKS NOW!!! I almost jumped an inch in the chair, got up, tore them into pieces and burned them in the fireplace.

This will sound crazy but it’s the only way I can explain it: As the books were burning, it seemed like the devils that were in the pages of the book were coming out and trying to strangle me. (It was not the smoke from the fireplace because it was vented properly.)

I looked at the blessed Jubilee Medal of St. Benedict* on the fireplace mantel and cried out: “JESUS, MARY, ST. BENEDICT - HELP!!!” Immediately - and I mean IMMEDIATELY - the demons were GONE. And my parents in the kitchen didn’t say anything. (Dad was reading the paper and Mom was doing something else.)
  • This was blessed by a Benedictine priest with the traditional blessing and exorcism.

Thank you for your story Margaret Ann, my post was meant to be a general request to posters because I was getting quick responses in a row and it came across that I was stomping on you a bit, my apologies for that. Testimonies like yours are valuable information!

That story of a personal story of deliverance,

Is backed up by the fact that the Vatican’s Doctrinal Commission into the Roman Catholic Charismatic Renewal; have stated that all christians and catholics can pray prayers of deliverance for each other, or themselves. (See the resources section for reading on the charism of deliverance, on their ICCR website).

(Exorcism by a priest who has permission from his bishop is for full possession of a person/ full demonic infestation of a place/ item), but all catholics can pray prayers for minor deliverance immediately, as Jesus promised in the bible: ‘These signs will accompany believers; … they will speak in other tongues, they will lay their hands on the sick and the sick will recover, they will cast out demons.’

The saints during a spiritual attack always made commands in the name of Jesus;
Such as: ‘In the Name of Jesus leave me now/ be silent/ never return/ etc’
This is followed by the evil spirits leaving IMMEDIATELY. Scripture says they have to bow to the authority of Jesus when you speak or think commands in the Name of Jesus.

Great story ! The devil is the great deceiver -
and has patience - hoping those books - were like seeds -
Now - that’s guarding - your holy temple 😇

Also: European and US exorcists have said, and they have prayers for this in their Exorcism Rite book,
That satanists, those involved in the occult/ new age/ pagan religions, can curse items, and these items end up with demonic infestation, and need exorcism, or deliverance prayers.
They recommend such items are burned or destroyed.

Hi. An ‘illusion’ is something that is not really there. If one were to see a demon in any form then it would be the case that the demon is there and so it is not an illusion.

The term ‘apparition’ is applied to the person of the Blessed Virgin.

A better word to describe a demonic attack is ‘…a demon appearing’ (note the Scripture reference cited earlier).

There are also visions, dreams and other forms of (real) communication.

To do with the subject, one has to ‘discern the spirits’. If one were to have a spiritual experience in these ways, then one could immediately test the spirits by questioning the validity of the source. It might disappear immediately or at the very least give an idea that it is demonic.

One way to tell, amongst others, is to understand the difference between the word ‘euphoria’, and the words ‘joy’ and ‘peace’. Saints have been in raptures but I think the term euphoria is still incorrect. That word denotes a feeling that is of one’s own emotion and/or of a false spirit i.e:- a demon does not bring about clarity, or profound elevation of the soul. A demon will offer a temporary ‘buzz’ that is superficial, and will bring with it an inducement to inferior thoughts, but when fought with prayer, disappears, as it lacks substance.

The difference between a demon and someone visiting from Heaven, is that demons are in spirit-form; whereas, souls from Heaven actually have (new) bodies, whilst Angels from Heaven, whilst also in spirit-form, will not seek to make things unclear.

I remember reading about Nostradamus - studied him for a while -
He was using certain methods - and ancient practices - etc -
well, one day, he must of been spooked -
because he burned all his various books he had -
this was around 1555 -
and the room - in fact, his house - was all aglow -
and many loud voices were heard - leaving - departing -
it was quite the scene !

I hate to mention what new age prayer is:

But for warning to others:
  1. Any emptying of oneself , going blank, emptying the mind, letting the mind go blank,
(It is a strategy used by the OCCULT because when you go blank to use a ouijii board, the emptiness in you lets an evil spirit in, to move your hands on the ouijii board to spell letters to you, Which is why people who get involved in the occult need full exorcism sometimes, because they let ‘something’ in,

Everything new age and occult requires the person to go blank/ empty themself. Fortune tellers/ hypnotists/ reiki ‘healers’ all ask this. And there are DOZENS of stories of the occult not being able to work if the client was wearing a blessed object on their person. Such as a fortune teller saying: ‘Take off that miraculous medal. I can not do my work at all while you are wearing it.’

The late Fr. Gabriel Amorth always used the old ritual of exorcism. He said it was more effective (paraphrasing here). He wrote 2 books as well.

It’s more than the Ouija board. Anything new age should be burned or destroyed, esp bad books.

Other new age prayers:
Direct worship of a deity, that is not God/ Jesus.
Or
Worship of satan/ demons,

Yes anything new age. New age blurs the line with the occult/ pagan worship.

Saint Paul says in the new testament:
‘Did you not know the pagan gods are actually false angels/ demons?’

Exorcists have found that pagan items / new age items often have a demonic infestation/ curse on them.

Such as the story of a woman who could not get pregnant with her husand until she had thrown out of her house, a pagan statue of the ‘god of fertility.’

Just want to add here, ‘emptying’ as a term can be misunderstood. If one goes blank with no intention of being in prayer to God, or, emptying in terms of following a New Age route, then the emptying of one’s mind can open it up to the unknown and/or the possibility of demonic forces; however, emptying one’s mind in terms of resting, relaxing, and being silent in the presence of God, knowing that He is there, is sound Catholic practice - this is actually a very advisable thing to do. It could be considered meditative. If more people went to prayer in this way then the numbers of people engaging in New Age ideas would, at a guess, be significantly less.

Emptying your mind - is like a Ouji board game ?

YoungCatholicGuy - you must have a very busy head then - lol

You must be able to feel some difference?

Ask them to pray the Hail Mary with you and so if they object or jumble the words up.

There have been stories of the saints where they explained the devil appeared to them as a fellow friar, mother superior, bishop, etc. to try to trick the saint into something.

This got me kind of worried. What if the devil were doing the same thing to us by pretending to be our parish priest or something.

If he were to do that, how would we be able to discern that it is actually the priest and not an evil illusion?
The simple answer is if what he teaches is contrary to Church teaching.

This sounds like a question for your spiritual director, or if I might say it without offending, your psychiatrist.
