How to explain the dangers on Twilight to kids

The OP has cross posted this across the internet if he’s not a troll he’s defiantly looking for some reaction.

Although with Billy I also smell troll.

OP is NOT the parent. Therefore he has NO say in how the children are raised. Once he’s married then he and the mother can talk. If the mother is on board all that needs to be said is that the movies are getting too mature for them and they can watch them when they are 13. Likely, however, a well meaning friend will let them watch as soon as they are on DVD. The real idea is to approach the subject with parental authority wich the OP dosn’t have.

Also if the OP is “live in” the mother will just make herself look foolish discussing morality with her children.

Lastly, the kids are 6 and 9…really? the first twilight movie came out over a year ago. The mom let a 4 or 5 year old watch the movie??? Are you kidding me? If so, there’s alot more that needs to be done than just twilight.
I think PurpleSunshine should be called “PerryMasonSunshine”

What are you talking about. I did not post this across the internet. One other board and that is it. Why am I a troll? I am asking a serious question. The girls are not allowed to see the next movie! I am asking how to explain it to the children why they can’t see it but they were allowed to see the first two.

Who are you to judge me as a troll and then out of no where throw in the “live in”. Where do you get that from?

Don’t bother with anymore advice I won’t listen to someone like you.

It is against rules on both forums to cross post. Read please.

x-posting puts you automatically into troll land.

You have ZERO right over the girls…even if they were watching chain saw massacare.

No, you didn’t say “live in” but a boyfriend, again, has NO rights over the children. You shouldn’t be influencing the mother about, either. And often times “live ins” have this need to parent. So you’re not a live in. Still dosn’t mean that this is not good. Dating parents need to also be very careful, you’re just a date. You’re not even engaged. The girls should be having MINIMAL contact with you, nevermind you helping make a parental decision.

And again. The mother let a 4 or 5 yr old watch a movie like that? HELLO! That’s nuts. Even if you like twilight…at 4??? It’s just wrong…and my warning is that you’ve stepped into a situation that requires far prudence and judgment and that you should truly examine the situation you’re in. I’m not saying she’s a bad mother or bad person but one needs to really be wary of someone who’d let a preschooler watch a romantic based vampire move.

I am dating a woman who has two kids from a previous marriage age 6 and 9. She let them see the first two twilight movies and enjoyed them herself. Now she realizes the agenda of the movies and the things that go against our faith, etc. They want to see the next movie. How do we explain that the movies are inappropriate now that they have seen the first two? Are there any resources out there? Thanks
I suggest just telling the kids the truth, but in an age-appropriate fashion. Simply state that mom has come to realize that the agenda of the movies is anti-Catholic (or immoral, or glorify evil, or whatever your objection is), and that allowing the kids to see the first two movies was a mistake that won’t be repeated with the third. You might get some lip in response, but I’d just put down the parental foot.

For the 9 year old, I might get more deeply into why.
-The relationship isn’t healthy (it’s quite obsessive).
-The very nature of undead is that they are not truly alive, which is anathema to the God of the living.
-The movies’ theme of chastity is undermined by its other grave problems; kind of like putting icing on dog dung and then trying to pass it off as good food.

BTW: That picture with Wesley Snipes in the background (an obvious reference to Blade) is a real hoot! :D:thumbsup:

I humbly submit you will catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

How about the mother just say to her children that she has decided after much discernment that all movies that are rated PG13 are off limits for the time being and the decision will be readdressed in a couple of years when the girls have aged and matured a bit. I wouldn’t even get into the dangers of Twilight, because if you make just this particular film off limits but allow other similarly rated films, you then get into a situation that you have to constantly explain why each and every PG13 film is appropriate or not appropriate.

What are you talking about crossing posts?? What forums are you talking about. I posted this once on here. secondly, who says i have any rights to the children. i am posting this on behalf of the mother to explain to the kids why she is not letting them see it. I got some good answers. Second of all the second movie came out last summer so the youngest was still 6. Where do you get 4 from, nice math on your part. My friend you are the troll coming on these boards with your high horse. Probably some fanatic shut in that has nothing better to do. Get a life

The OP said, “the first two twilight movies.” The 3rd is coming out and he wants to know what the best way to go about explaining to a 6 and 9 year old why they can’t watch it.

My answer: “Because I said so.” ( I know, I know… not politically correct) 😉
AMEN :blessyou:

I think the question you asked was a good one and I don’t care if you are the parent or not. I’m guessing your girlfriend asked your advice on how to handle this so yay for you posting it here to get some good ideas. I’m glad that you found some of responses helpful.

As a side note, even if the Mom let her young children watch the first two movies, the point is she doesn’t want them to watch any more. We ALL make mistakes as parents… this Mom is obviously trying to do the right thing now. Good for her. I don’t think her kids are going to be scared for life because they saw the first two movies, but I’m happy they won’t be seeing anymore unitl they are older.

God bless. 🙂

BTW the movies are on DVD and the kids did not have to watch them in a theater, they could have had family movie night at home and that means they could have watched them last night for the first time, and the ages of the kids would be what they are now. To ASSUME that the children saw the movies as soon as they were released is not a good idea.

I had this problem with the last movie. My Ex’s then girlfriend (now wife) allowed my children who were 5 & 6 at the time, to watch the first twilight (they also let them watch much worse scary movies). Then my kids came to live with me and wanted to see the second movie when it came out. I simply told them the first one was not appropriate for children their age- by showing them the rating, and they would not be allowed to watch the new ones either. We always look at ratings and they know I will look at the whys of a rating to determine what is making it rated that as well to determine if it is okay for my kids.

I was a single parent for a very long time, and when you are with someone for a long time and you think that the relationship is heading to marriage you will start to include them in your children’s lives. You will also ask them their opinions on important matters. It’s no different then seeking advice form my friends, or my sister.

Off subject, but I’m confused. You’re considered being a troll if you ask the same question on a totally different forum other than CAF?

Exactly, she made the mistake of letting her kids see a movie that is the craze now with grade school kids. She didn’t know the Catholic Church had spoken against it and she didn’t see the dangers until now. She made a mistake and now is trying to make up for it by explain to the kids why it is not a good movie to see. Actually she only needs to explain it to the 9 year old, the 6 year old wasn’t even paying attention to it she actually kept asking when it was over and had no interest in it.

I only thing the movies and books are for girls maybe 13 and up due to the sexual content and references. Eclipse has a few beheadings…bloodless but violent non the less maybe mention that fact. 👍

Ouch!

I’m  too… I might ask a question about running on this forum - and I most certainly would post it on the Running Forum to which I belong. Would that make me a troll? Ditto when I was pregnant and having problems… I posted here for Catholic support - but also on a pregnancy forum for more of a medical (ish) take on it.

Is that really bad manners? I had no idea.

PS ------> Your forum name makes me smile every time I see it.

And how would anyone even know you had posted on a totally different message board unless they were also members there as well and were monitoring your activiity on two different boards, independent from each other. That’s the part I’m also confused about.

When I first encountered this thread a couple of days ago, I had never heard of this series of films, as indicated by my first couple of posts.

Now I realize that they are quite popular, but what exactly is ‘anti-Catholic’ about them?

I remember similar outrage from fundamentalist Protestants (hopefully no Catholics) when the “Star Wars” films debuted, mainly due to the opening title, “A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…” Of course, every Christian knows that the universe is only a few thousand years old, and that there is no life anywhere but on earth.

I was living in the American South at the time, where ‘science’ and ‘fantasy’ are apparently unknown concepts.

I also remember when I was a highschool kid, and Elia Kazan’s “Baby Doll” was current, based on a play (with a different titile) by Tennesee Williams, and we were warned that attending that film would almost certainly result in our eternal damnation.

I saw the film much later in life, on videotape, it was a damn good film. Films about people who do immoral things (and in most cases suffer the consequences) are not necessarily immoral films.

Beeliner, this post is totally rock and roll, which is my hip and cool way of saying it’s awesome! 👍👍👍

See… and here I thought that a “troll” as defined by most form users is someone that posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. Using that widely accepted definition, it technically makes you a troll as your post was not on the topic of “How to explain the dangers on Twilight to kids,” it’s intent was inflammatory (name calling), and it obviously incited an emotional response from the OP as he felt he had to defend himself from your accusation of being a troll. Did I mention it was also not very charitable?

Opps… I suppose I am a “troll” too since this post was not on topic. Sorry. 😉

The kids are safer watching Twilight in a theater with their mother than at home with a remote control in their hands.😉
