How to explain to Anglican that Mary is the Mother of God?

Jesus is a divine person-who assumed a human nature: “Whatever He was He retained, whatever He was not He assumed…”

It’s called “the communication of idioms” which is a fancy way of saying that whatever is said about any part of a person must be attributed to the entire person himself.

Jesus has two natures but He is not two “persons”. Jesus IS God. He is fatherless in His humanity(hence the virgin birth)and motherless in His divinity(hence the Incarnation of the Word).

As others have said Mary didn’t give birth to a “nature”, neither do human mothers give birth to mere “natures”. Mothers give birth to persons, and the Person that Mary gave birth to was a divine Person who was conceived in Her by the Holy Spirit and Who was from the beginning God with God.

She is the mother of God made man.

Hence then Mary is the mother of God.

The reason people jump so hard on these things is that the truth is important. It’s easy for people to misstate theological points and then believe what they said.

The question of the natures and wills of Jesus did a lot of mischief in the days of the late Roman/Byzantine empire, and it’s one of the reasons there are various Coptic churches instead of just one Catholic or Orthodox one.

It’s like warning people that they’re misspelling the name of a pharmacy drug. A small change in spelling can make a big difference in what you get, and whether or not the drug kills you.
