I’m wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for a good-old-fashioned prayer book. I’m 20 years old and I’m looking for something that will fit my maturing spirituality. Recently I visited my grandparents and they showed me the prayer books that they had when they were children and I thought they were wonderful (They had a wonderful variety of prayers, Many of the prayers were translated into Latin, It had excerpts of Church Documents, Wonderful Illustrations, It gave a concise church history, and it was high quality…i.e. leather bound, quality paper, etc.)

I own the “Handbook of Prayers” and I like it, however, it’s not exactly as rich in prayers or as durable as I was looking for. Anyone have any suggestions?

You might like the Father Lasance Prayer Book. You can find them all over ebay. I also like the “Treasury of Prayers” by Fr. Lovasik or the “Baltimore Book of Prayers”. You can get both from Roman Catholic Books.

Father Hardon’s Catholic Prayer Book with Meditations, favorite traditional prayers, many in Latin. With my LOTH, this is “the last prayer book you will ever need.”

from Inter Mirifica at www.intermirifica.org
who distribute all his books and tapes

For some reason that link dosen’t want to work

I have an old St Josephs Missal that I bought in a Good will Store,
and another one I just bought was Fulten Sheens War time prayer book. I keep it in my purse… 👍

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up buying The Baltimore Book of Prayers, though I plan on buying a few others. Again, thanks for all the help and if anyone has any heirloom quality suggestions they would be most appreciated. I was supprised to find my Great-Grandfather’s prayer book still in very good shape after all these years. I guess they just don’t make them like they used to huh?

Like Puzzle Annie, I love the Catholic Prayer book by Fr. Hardon. Talk about the Holy Spirit working, I intended to buy a different book. How wonderfully written and logically ordered this book is.

It is well worth the extra ten dollars I spent on it.

I was just informed that that “Roman Catholic Books” has decided to no longer reprint the Baltimore Book of Prayers. Since they were the manufacture it is no longer going to be avaliable…my order has been canceled 😦 I suppose I will look for another book.

Hi Joseph,

You could call a few Catholic bookstores—they may still have a copy. or did you try Amazon.com? They may have a new or used copy.

Do you pray the Liturgy of the Hours? This is actually the public prayer of the church, the Divine office that priests and religious must say daily. Some churches (but not very many) even have service and pray the hours as community.

The most common book is “Christian Prayer” published by the Catholic Book Publishing Co Since you are not obliged to pray the hours, don’t get stressed if you can’t pray all of them or even miss some days entirely.

Praying the hours has been a wonderful boost to my spiritual life.
